Clinical Exercise Physiologist

At Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, the Cardiovascular Health Clinic offers an unpaid Clinical Exercise Physiologist Internship for undergraduate and graduate students in exercise science, health and wellness promotion, and related fields. Self-motivated, enthusiastic, creative students looking for experience in a clinical patient care setting are encouraged to apply.


The Clinical Exercise Physiologist Internship at the Cardiovascular Health Clinic provides you with comprehensive, hands-on practical and technical experience in delivering innovative clinical services. Internships last 12 to 15 weeks, but length may be adjusted to meet school requirements.

As a Clinical Exercise Physiologist intern, you will experience the following components of preventive and rehabilitative cardiology:

  • Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation
  • Nutrition education
  • Risk factor reduction assessment and education
  • Patient care case management
  • Stress management education
  • Exercise prescription consultation
  • Body composition testing
  • Functional assessments
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • Pulmonary function testing

Your responsibilities include:

  • Administering fitness assessments
  • Providing exercise prescriptions and consultations
  • Providing behavior and physical activity counseling
  • Obtaining patient vital signs and inputting data
  • Interpreting electrocardiograms and recognizing rhythms
  • Designing and presenting an educational bulletin board
  • Reviewing cardiac rehabilitation patient cases
  • Delivering high-quality customer service with confidentiality and compassion

Additionally, you have the opportunity to observe other disciplines at Mayo Clinic, such as physical medicine and sports medicine, physician consultations, executive health consultations with clinical exercise physiologists, dietitian consultations, behavior modification, physical therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiac surgery, angiography, enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP), electrophysiology studies, echocardiography, vascular studies, and patient education.

Orientation
Your internship begins with an orientation designed to acclimate you to Mayo Clinic, the Cardiovascular Health Clinic and the community of Rochester, Minnesota. During orientation, you have opportunities for both skills training and hands-on experience.

Transportation and Parking

You will need to make your own arrangements for traveling to and from work. Your preceptor will be able to assist you in making arrangements for transportation the day of your orientation.

  • Driving or carpooling to a Park and Ride lot, from which you take a Rochester Public Transit bus to the Mayo Clinic campus
  • Taking public bus transportation on Rochester Public Transit (Mayo Clinic pays for your bus pass)

Eligibility

Mayo Clinic seeks diverse candidates from undergraduate and graduate programs across the country for the Clinical Exercise Physiologist Internship. Qualified candidates should be self-motivated, enthusiastic, creative and enrolled in one of the following undergraduate or graduate programs:

  • Exercise science
  • Health and wellness promotion
  • Another related major

Students should be in the process of completing their senior year of college when applying to the internship (should have completed all course work except their internship or have one semester left following their internship). It is recommended that you have completed course work in electrocardiography, graded exercise testing, exercise physiology and pharmacology prior to your internship.

Undergraduate applicants are given priority over graduate applicants, who have not previously completed a clinical internship. If you have already completed a clinical internship (undergraduate or graduate), you may not be considered for the unpaid Clinical Exercise Physiologist Internship in the Cardiovascular Health Clinic.
