Responsibilities
The Hospital Medicine Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant (NP / PA) works collaboratively with the Hospitalist physician to deliver medical care to hospitalized patients. The focus of the job includes providing acute hospital care to complex medical patients.
This position is a SEMN regional position with primary work site in Austin. SEMN sites include I-90 Corridor (Austin-Albert Lea), River Corridor (Red Wing, Cannon Falls, Lake City) and I-35 Corridor (Owatonna). NPs / PAs practice in all SEMN sites.
Additional responsibilities include consulting on orthopedic, general surgery, urology, and occasionally OB/GYN patients requiring pre-operative evaluation and/or management of medical comorbidities. A high level of autonomy is expected. The NP / PA provides comprehensive bedside assessment, ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosis, prescription of pharmacologic agents and treatments and non-pharmacologic therapies as well as documentation of patient care. The NP / PA will work with the interdisciplinary care team in coordinating discharge planning and facilitate the patient's transfer of care back to the primary provider. The NP / PA will consult and make referrals to physicians and other members of the health care team as appropriate.
The Austin hospital has 39 med-surgical beds and 12 ICU beds. During the day, the NP / PA teams with 3 physician Hospitalists to provide in-patient care, including care for ICU patients. The ICU is remotely monitored 24/7 by Mayo Clinic’s eICU. For questions arising for ICU patients the Critical Care team is immediately available by phone or via video teleconference in the patient room. The 3pm – 11pm shift, staffed by 1 NP / PA, supports admissions to both the med-surg and ICU. At night, the NP / PA teams with 1 physician hospitalist to support admissions and cross coverage of the med-surgical unit and ICU.
Orientation is individualized with a base of 12 weeks and extended in one month periods to meet the needs of the new NP / PA. Will orientate at each site (Austin, Owatonna, and Red Wing).

Qualifications
- Nurse Practitioners: Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license (or eligible) and certification (or eligible to be certified) as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP
- Prefer FNP applicants to have had RN experience in medicine and ICU care.
- Physician Assistant: graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (or eligible)
- Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges
- One to two years experience in the care of medical/ surgical inpatients or emergency medicine is preferred.
- ACLS & BLS
- Strong written and oral communication skills are required and must have demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team
