THE MAYO CLINIC ALZHEIMER DISEASE RESEARCH CENTER invites applicants for an open-rank position in Neurosciences focused on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) Science. The DEIB Lead will partner with the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer Disease Research Center (ADRC) Leadership Team to support the aims of the Center and initiatives to achieve short and long-term goals. Applicants should demonstrate broad knowledge of and commitment to research specific to DEIB science. The ideal candidate will maintain a strong research portfolio in areas including, but not limited to cognitive aging and dementia research among older adults, and brain health. Commensurate evidence of productivity is expected, including but not limited to peer-reviewed publications, grants, partnering with community stakeholders, establishing new research cohorts, or developing a focused curriculum. Potential candidates with experience in mixed-methods and community-based participatory research are encouraged to apply. This position will be based on the Mayo Clinic campus in Jacksonville, Florida.
THE MAYO CLINIC ALZHEIMER DISEASE RESEARCH CENTER is internationally recognized and respected for academic excellence in the diagnosis, treatment, and investigation of age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The Mayo Clinic ADRC strives to promote the highest quality team-based research in neurodegenerative diseases and to translate this knowledge to improve population health. Faculty within the Mayo Clinic ADRC have expertise in behavioral neurology, neuropsychology, neurogenetics, neuropathology, disease modeling, immunity, and experimental therapeutics. ADRC faculty benefit from consistent extramural funding via the National Institutes of Health (NIA and NINDS), Florida State government, national and regional foundations, industry, and philanthropic partners. Collectively, these funding sources support community-based research that spans the spectrum of age-related neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease, Lewy body disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, and vascular cognitive impairment. The research mission of the ADRC is supported through close collaboration with the Departments of Neuroscience, Neurology, and Neurosurgery.
The Mayo Clinic ADRC Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (ADRC-DEIB) Lead will hold an academic appointment within Mayo Clinic College of Science and Medicine within the Department of Neuroscience (Assistant, Associate, or Professor), and will report to the Chair of the Department of Neuroscience at Mayo Clinic Florida and Mayo Clinic ADRC Directors.
The Mayo Clinic ADRC-DEIB Lead will,
Partner with ADRC leadership to build, grow, and sustain the DEIB research and implementation within the ADRC.
Establish ADRC-DEIB priorities.
Recruit and supervise essential personnel.
Advance the understanding of DEIB science at Mayo Clinic and beyond.
Advance the understanding of socio-economic-environmental contributors to brain health and age-related neurodegenerative diseases amongst community-based research participants.
Develop metrics for tracking and reporting DEIB measures amongst community-based research participants.
Lead applications for extramural grant funding to support ADRC-DEIB efforts, advance scientific objectives, and improve the care of patients / participants. Candidates will be mentored in this responsibility to support a successful transition to independent funding and research operations.
Disseminate findings through peer reviewed publications, reporting to granting agencies, conference attendance, presentation at academic conferences, and communication with key stakeholders including community-based advisory boards, external advisory committees, and community partners.
Partner with ADRC Core Leads to advance scientific objectives and ADRC Operations.
Develop new strategies to promote diversity recruitment in community-based research programs.
Collaborate with the Mayo Clinic ADRC Outreach, Recruitment, and Engagement Core to promote recruitment of community-based participants within clinical research programs.
Support applications for extramural grant funding to promote diversity recruitment within existing research programs.
Develop and coordinate efforts toward training a research workforce that increasingly represents the diversity of our community.
Represent Mayo Clinic ADRC at relevant conferences and meetings (regional, national, international).
Advance education relevant to DEIB.
Support education and training of Mayo Clinic learners, faculty, and research personnel, including education related to the value of DEIB and obstacles to implementation: e.g., unconscious bias.
Recruit and supervise graduate and post-graduate trainees.
Support Enterprise-wide efforts to promote DEIB.
Coordinate with relevant Mayo Clinic Offices and Committees to advance Mayo Clinic’s vision for DEIB across all campuses. This includes the Office for Education Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Research Diversity and Inclusion, and the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion.
Maintain knowledge of and expertise in the latest DEIB best practices.
Regularly attend relevant forums to remain up to date with research and educational initiatives specific to DEIB and communicate these to Mayo Clinic faculty and ADRC leadership.
The Mayo Clinic ADRC is committed to supporting the ADRC-DEIB Lead in the conduct of responsibilities and ensuring for the ideal candidate’s professional growth and academic advancement. Consistent with these goals, the Mayo Clinic ADRC-DEIB Lead will receive,
Sustained FTE support. Leadership will mentor successful candidates to ensure a successful transition from institutional to extramural funding to sustain an independent research career.
Support for ancillary staff, including study coordinators and administrative personnel required to conduct responsibilities.
License or certification
The ideal candidate will:
Hold an advanced degree (PhD or MD).
Be eligible for appointment at the academic rank of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Demonstrate broad knowledge of DEIB science and commitment to advancing research in these areas.
Have an established track record in community engagement research, including peer-reviewed publications, grants, or other accomplishments.
Model professionalism and instill professionalism skills in others.
Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment and to build team consensus.
Have expertise in mixed-methods research, including community-based participatory research.
The Mayo Clinic ADRC-DEIB Lead will be based on the Mayo Clinic Florida campus (Jacksonville, FL).
Time commitment will be 1.0 FTE (0.8 for MD or equivalent candidate with clinical responsibilities).
