Position description
The Department of Surgery is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for a 0.5 FTE position in outpatient general surgery who will work in collaboration with consultants, fellow/residence, nursing, and other staff to provide high-quality clinical care. The NP/PA will be responsible for managing community general surgery clinic visits, including consultations, pre and postoperative management, and wound care for adult and pediatric General surgery patients. Candidates hired into this roll will have the opportunity to partner with adult community general surgeons in the management of these patients. The Division of Community General Surgery at the Southeast Minnesota Mayo Clinic Health System hospitals is well known for providing high quality care to patients in close association with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Our main services include: Emergency surgery for injured and acutely ill patients; Outpatient consultations for general surgical conditions; Elective surgery to adult patients. Mayo Clinic emphasizes a team care approach. Together, the team provides high-quality care around the clock to patients in the general surgery clinic, the operating room, intensive care unit and other hospital nursing units. The SEMN General Surgery group is seeking an individual who is interested in becoming part of the general surgery team who also desires a level of autonomy within their practice and who enjoys working with a wide spectrum of patients in a setting that is dedicated to providing top quality care while fostering independence and empowerment. Provision of care includes, but is not limited to: comprehensive physical assessment including completion of outpatient consults; order, conduct and interpretation of diagnostic tests; assist with or perform minor clinical procedures; order diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Responsible for prescribing pharmacologic agents and treatments. Current duties do not include OR or inpatient responsibilities and does not include overnight or weekend coverage. Educating and counseling patients, their families or significant others is an important part of the role. A high level of autonomy is expected, though this position will also have connections with the General Surgery practice in Rochester.

Qualifications
Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and nurse practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license and certification, or eligible to be certified, as an FNP, ANP or ACNP;

or Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by the NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota State Board of Medical Practice. The NP/PA must be eligible for DEA registration.

Additional qualifications
Previous experience in general surgery is preferred, but new graduates will be considered. Strong written and oral communication skills are required and must have demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.

General Surgery APP clinic is open every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. This position would cover 5 of the 6 clinic days every two weeks, with the other being staffed by APP staff from Rochester.
