Responsibilities

The Surgical Assistant is accountable for the delivery of direct patient care and may oversee care provided by assistive personnel. When patient care is provided the nursing process of assessing, diagnosing, outcome identification, planning, implementing and evaluating is the basis for care. The Surgical Assistant assesses and plans in collaboration with the patient, significant other and interdisciplinary healthcare team to meet the patient's educational and discharge needs. This individual serves as a liaison between the physician and patients and provides accurate information about the surgeon's practice and anticipated procedures. The Surgical Assistant must be an experienced perioperative nurse who can perform an expanded perioperative role under the direction of the physician, and provide surgical assistance to physicians, fellows or residents throughout surgery. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span. The ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and appropriately interpret information relative to the patient's age-specific needs is required. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice (2004), the AAACN Ambulatory Care Nursing Administration and Practice Standards (2004), the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing (2001), the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) Guidelines provide a basis for practice.
