The Executive Director of Discovery Oasis, together with Mayo Clinic’s Medical Director of Discovery Oasis, coordinates and executes Mayo Clinic in Arizona’s Discovery Oasis strategy to create a world-renowned health innovation and transformation ecosystem on over 100 acres of Mayo Clinic’s Phoenix campus. The vision of Discovery Oasis is to enable transformative, sustainable, and strategic growth across clinical practice, education, and research. Discovery Oasis will serve as a platform for health, innovation, and medical breakthroughs; while simultaneously attracting a pipeline of next generation talent.

Collaborators within Discovery Oasis will further Mayo Clinic’s vison for transforming health care in alignment with Mayo’s Bold. Forward. strategic plan. The Executive Director and Medical Director of Discovery Oasis will provide overall management and operating direction for Discovery Oasis, accelerate the momentum of Mayo Clinic in Arizona as a premiere destination medical center, and inspire a passion for Mayo Clinic’s values. In addition, they enable a culture of innovation and energy to better serve the needs of our patients and the transformation of health care. They are responsible for recruitment and retention of outstanding, diverse partners and ensure management of critical resources to achieve the goals for Discovery Oasis while also collaborating closely with Mayo Clinic International, Mayo Clinic Platform and the Mayo Clinic Center for Digital Health.

In partnership with the Arizona CEO, CAO, and Medical Director of Discovery Oasis, the Executive Director oversees Discovery Oasis’s:
  • Strategic Plan:
    • Planning and execution of a 20-year Development Plan to manage the land, economic development, community relations, community outreach, marketing, and state, county, and public relations.
  • Operating performance:
    • Responsible for leading and overseeing staff accountable for attracting new business partnerships to Discovery Oasis, evaluating the viability of outside business partners, alliances, joint ventures, and venture capital sources that support the development and implementation of strategic initiatives.
    • Management of the portfolio of innovation and research activities that fuel the organic and inorganic growth of Discovery Oasis.
    • Oversee and manage the execution of the development plan, including the day-to-day operations of the department and staff.
  • Financial strength:
    • Achievement of the annual financial targets for Discovery Oasis through excellent revenue and cost management.
    • Stewardship of Discovery Oasis resources and capital investments.
    • Fostering benefactor relationships resulting in sustained achievement of annual fundraising goals.
  • Mayo’s brand and reputation:
    • Be the primary liaison and oversee the development and enhancement of the relationship between the State, City, County, Mayo Clinic and the broader community for Discovery Oasis.
    • Recognition by external commercial and technology entities as a top healthcare institution to develop as a partner.
    • Management of risk, compliance and legal programs and policies in operations that mitigate risk while supporting the growth of the businesses in Discovery Oasis.
In addition, the Executive Director of Discovery Oasis works closely with Mayo’s other site and shield leaders to share practices, collaborate on initiatives/innovations, and benchmark performance.

The Arizona Executive Director of Discovery Oasis serves on key Arizona executive committees including Arizona Space and Capital Committee and the Discovery Oasis Steering Committee (chair).

The Arizona Executive Director of Discovery Oasis reports to Mayo Clinic in Arizona’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Ideal Candidate Profile
  • Master’s degree in business or healthcare administration, or equivalency of advanced degree with significant business development and administrative leadership.
  • Experience that provides perspective and understanding of the challenges and opportunities of a Mayo Clinic destination medical center, including experience in Mayo’s three shields.
  • Role model of Mayo Clinic values, with servant leader attributes and the highest integrity and institutional credibility.
  • Strong financial and analytical skills with demonstrated history of systematic problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to form trust-based relationships with benefactors, physicians, staff, and other internal and external partner stakeholders.
  • Innovative, independent thinker, with demonstrated track record of positive outcomes.
  • Excellent written and public presentation skills.
  • Excellent team leadership skills to inspire, lead and guide teams as well as to interact effectively with high-level contacts within and outside the organization.
  • Credible champion of practices that promote equity, inclusion, and diversity among staff, patients, and communities.
Organizational Requirements
  • The primary work location is Phoenix/Scottsdale, Arizona.
  • Travel is required to Mayo Clinic’s sites and other business-related venues.
  • Develop local and national networks requiring participation in work outside of traditional work hours including but not limited to meetings, dinners, and networking activities.
