Position description
Provides care to animals used in support of lab project goals. Exercises independent professional judgment in the assessment of animal health and consults with veterinarians and investigators regarding appropriate diagnosis, therapy, and management. Assists in the planning, implementation, and modification of animal use in experiments. Works independently but interacts with consultant, staff, residents, medical students, and other personnel using the animal facilities to exchange information and resolve problems. Performs and assists others performing surgical procedures in the procedural room, administering anesthesia, and providing postoperative care. Performs technical analysis of specimens obtained from animals and uses independent professional judgment to interpret results. Maintains established cell lines for future use in animals (feeding, passaging, lifting, and cryopreserving). Trains residents/fellows/temporary lab personnel in laboratory animal methodology. Responsible for maintaining anesthetic, surgical equipment and medical supplies, including pharmaceuticals.

**A two-year commitment to this position is required**


Qualifications
Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, and 2 years previous experience with lab animal species required.

**This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship with the exception of the TN visa classification; Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program**



Additional qualifications
Certification as Assistant Laboratory Animal Technologist or Technician through the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science is desirable. Must be able to follow oral and written directions. Must have the ability to organize and carry out medical and surgical techniques independently. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays. Must be able to work well with others.

Schedule details
Monday - Friday, 6am - 2:30pm. However, this position includes a rotation to a 7am -3:30pm shift for one week every month.

Weekend schedule
No routine weekends are currently scheduled, but laboratory leadership reserves the right to add weekend shifts in the future if necessary to cover the lab's 24x7x365 operation.
