Position description

Mayo Clinic welcomes applications for a full-time Archivist II position in Rochester, Minnesota. An experienced archivist is being recruited to take an active role in collecting and managing the existing and emerging archival resources. Identification, acquisition, preservation, and discoverability of institutional collections, both physical and digital, that document Mayo Clinic in Rochester's history will be the primary responsibilities of the archivist. The archivist will help create documentation relating to acquisition of new materials and facilitate their formal accessioning into the collections. The successful candidate will be expected to provide reference and research service to the Mayo Clinic community on the use of archival materials. The archivist will also take part in the planning and execution of exhibits, lectures, and interviews that enhance the historical experience of patients and employees on the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester. The Archivist II position will work as a member of an archival team and report to the archives coordinator located in Rochester, Minnesota.

Under general supervision, the Archivist II performs professional level responsibilities encompassing library science, archival work, information management and information technology. This position, which applies to both Librarian II and Archivist II positions, may perform work related to public services, technical services, systems or archives. Archives responsibilities may include development, processing, description, digitization and preservation of archival materials. Depending on work setting, the Archivist II may direct work unit activity in the absence of the supervisor. May participate on workplace committees or task forces. May perform other tasks that support services, maintain workload, or provide coverage in the work unit or elsewhere in the integrated system of Mayo Clinic Libraries and Historical Units.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify, acquire and preserve Mayo Clinic in Rochester archival collections, faculty, employee and benefactor materials, and institutional records, in physical and digital formats.

  • Provide reference services, serves as primary contact for inquiries regarding Mayo Clinic in Rochester history, and assists and monitors researchers.

  • Proactively collaborate with Mayo Clinic departments to advance the management of records and advise on records preservation in Rochester through collection and management of written and oral histories.

  • Coordinate events and activities that enhance the Mayo Clinic historical collection.

  • Collaborate with other Mayo Clinic archivists and historical unit personnel to coordinate promotion and access to Mayo Clinic collections and develop resources to support academic study and research.

  • Participate in outreach services, including development and coordination of exhibits and lectures for faculty, staff, students, patients and others.

  • Collaborate with technical services and digital archivists to develop strategic approaches to description, metadata, and born-digital collections.

  • May have oversight for the work of volunteer staff, students or interns in support of Mayo Clinic archive or historical unit projects.

  • Participate on various library and institutional committees as assigned.

  • Commitment to participate in relevant continuing education, in person or virtually.

    Occasionally provides input and assists in developing policy and decision making to support the Mayo Clinic Archives system. May perform other tasks that support services, maintain workload, or provide coverage in the work unit or elsewhere in the archives.

Master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent archival degree.
Basic level knowledge in the following areas: information services, information management, instruction and instructional design, leadership and management, evidence-based practice and research, and health information professionalism.

Additional qualifications
• Library/archives experience, particularly work experience in a health sciences or scientific research library or institutional archive
• AHIP membership, additional advanced degree in subject area pertinent to the position or significant progress toward either
• Mayo Clinic Academic appointment
• History of relevant scholarly publications or presentations
• Record of professional association participation or community service

• Graduate education in archival management plus postgraduate work experience in an archival or museum environment.
