Position description
The national media relations manager is a key role on the media relations team and in the Division of Consumer Communications within the Department of Public Affairs. This leadership position plays an instrumental role in building visibility of Mayo’s key strategic business priorities and positioning Mayo as a Category of One and positioning our executive leaders, leading researchers and practitioners within high-profile national media outlets. This person also collaborates with media relations colleagues in our international and US regions to tailor and leverage nationally-pitched stories in the those geographies and works across Public Affairs divisions to bring visibility for these stories in our owned and social media channels, and with other key target audiences and stakeholders.

The Communications Manager takes an active leadership role to successfully drive, develop, implement, monitor and measure results of communications efforts to advance Mayo Clinic’s strategic plan and business objectives. Demonstrates adaptability and can successfully navigate across organization and within professional, collaborative environment. Understands health care industry, external environment and their impact on functional discipline and helps other team members improve their understanding. Proactively leads cross-functional continuous improvement and process improvements, and benchmarks and researches best practices to adopt and adapt within Mayo. Successfully resolves conflict and builds strong team dynamics through strong interpersonal communications. Uses multi-dimensional thinking to integrate variety of functional strategies into a holistic plan. Conveys confidence, clarity and transparency in communications with stakeholders and leaders. May directly supervise coordinators, associates or specialists or indirectly supervise functional areas of responsibility. Manages ongoing relationship with third parties and contractors. Manages budgets. Exhibits servant leadership with empathy, kindness and support inspiring loyalty. Instills direction, alignment and commitment for a shared sense of purpose.

*This position is 100% remote work.

A bachelor’s degree in a related field, which may include liberal arts, business, communications, marketing, health care, or similar field, plus 7 years professional experience in the field of communications or a Master’s plus 5 years of experience is required.

Additional qualifications
Proven expertise in creating and executing communications strategies based upon business objectives. Requires strong leadership, problem solving, critical thinking, active listening, persuasive oral and written communication skills, presentation skills and interpersonal skills. Proven communications consultative, planning and execution abilities. Must be able to work effectively in a consensus-style and collaborative environment that expects and promotes teamwork. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, changing environment. Must possess high personal motivation supporting a strong work ethic, flexibility and creativity. Must possess the ability to inspire trust and confidence, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively to drive forward multiple projects. Has a positive influence on others. Must have servant leadership skills and expertise to oversee functional area. Position requires occasional travel and the flexibility to work weekends and evenings as necessary.

Exemption status

Compensation Detail
Required education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.  The salary range every 2 weeks is approximately $3964.80-$5748.80 based on a full-time position.

Schedule details
Must be able to work an 8-hour shift Monday - Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., as well as meet needs of the position during off hours.

*This position is 100% remote work.

Weekend schedule
This role may require weekend work on an as-needed basis.
