Responsibilities

The science editor inspires principal-level gifts ($1M+) for Mayo Clinic’s top priorities by conveying complex biomedical and technical topics in compelling ways. As a member of the Development Communications team, this role leads content development for science-driven benefactor proposals, stewardship reports, magazine articles and multimedia assets while also editing peer content and bolstering the team’s overall science writing acumen.  

The science editor builds meaningful relationships with Mayo Clinic’s priority leaders and world-class experts to understand how Mayo’s translational model of research is differentiated and poised to solve unmet patient needs. In addition, the science editor applies their subject matter expertise to advance Development business objectives in collaboration with Mayo Clinic executive leadership, fundraising professionals, functional Development programs and staff in adjacent departments, such as Communications, Marketing and the Executive Office.



Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in a related field, which may include liberal arts, business, communications, marketing, health care, or similar field, plus 7 years professional experience in the field of communications, or a Master’s plus 5 years of experience, is required. Experience working in fundraising or non-profit communications is strongly preferred.

Proven expertise in creating and executing communications strategies based upon business objectives. Requires strong leadership, problem solving, critical thinking, active listening, persuasive oral and written communication skills, presentation skills and interpersonal skills. Proven communications consultative, planning and execution abilities. Must be able to work effectively in a consensus-style and collaborative environment that expects and promotes teamwork. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, changing environment. Must possess high personal motivation supporting a strong work ethic, flexibility and creativity. Must possess the ability to inspire trust and confidence, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively to drive forward multiple projects. Has a positive influence on others. Must have servant leadership skills and expertise to oversee functional area. Position requires occasional travel and the flexibility to work weekends and evenings as necessary.

Strong written and oral communication skills across various mediums. Ability to communicate in a way that creates clarity, simplifies messages, and aligns with organizational strategy. Knowledge of channels for communication and the ability to build effective communication and engagement strategies.  

Must be a self-starter with the ability to independently identify opportunities, solutions and resolve challenges. Demonstrated ability to deliver impactful results. Requires an attitude that actively seeks out change, embraces critical questioning, innovation, service and continuous improvement. Must understand how to deal with and navigate ambiguity, and act without having the total picture. 

Demonstrated professionalism and ethics, with ability to earn credibility through integrity and transparency. Role models service excellence. Motivates others by being present, engaged and attentive. Invites diverse perspectives, demonstrates and inspires a collaborative spirit. 

Excellent interpersonal skills to include presentation, negotiation, persuasion, team facilitation and ability to provide constructive feedback are required. Superior project management experience, knowledge and skills. Incumbent must have the ability to independently manage a varied workload of projects with multiple priorities. Demonstrates interest in continuous learning and professional development, in addition to functional area expertise.
