The Graduate Research Employment Program (GREP) is a post-baccalaureate program for participants with an interest in biomedical research. The primary purpose of GREP is to provide a post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience that applies skills in science, technology, engineering or math to biomedical research including basic science or translational research. GREP participants gain research experience that may help them to decide on a career path related to biomedical research. In addition, the experience can increase the participants’ competitiveness and preparation for the next step in their career. These goals are achieved by providing:
• A mentored research experience in a world-class biomedical research laboratory
• Opportunities to participate in selected graduate classes and seminars
• Career development, mentoring and networking opportunities
• Presentation opportunities
The scientific goal is to explore the role of the neuro-symbolic approaches on artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Specifically, these include 1) solving symbolic problems with deep learning; 2) using symbolic knowledge bases and expressive metadata to improve deep learning systems; 3) explainability through background knowledge; and 4) complex problem solving through coupling of deep learning and symbolic components. The Logic Tensor Network (LTN), as a neurosymbolic approach, creates a new model based on TensorFlow. LTN gives logical meaning to the model and allows the users to implement the first order logic between the raw data. LTN trains the model by
comparing the difference between the logical relationship of the results and the knowledge base. Previous experiment in our team shows that LTN models can classify the state of obesity and comorbidities through the logical knowledge base subtracted from the standardized data of discharge summaries. This approach demonstrated the feasibility of building the machine learning models by implementing the logical relationship of the standard medical data.
