Position description
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design and build back-end services that support our portfolio of data-centric clinical and analytic applications. These applications leverage cloud computing, big data, mobile, data science, data warehousing, machine learning using state of the art software development applications and frameworks. Our Software Engineers ensures that these cloud-based micro-services adhere to uptime and accuracy targets, are resilient, and scale as data volumes and traffic increase. They work closely with the data engineering, platform, and solutions teams to develop applications as required to benefit our practice and patients.
• Works closely with the Product Owners, Product Managers, Architects to translate requirements into code.
• Developing services around data warehousing, big data, cloud computing, business intelligence, analytics and machine learning.
• Participate in DevOps, Agile, continuous development and integration frameworks.
• Programming in high-level languages such as Go, Python, Java etc.
• Ensure all appropriate documentation of processes and source code is created and maintained.
• Communicate effectively with peers, leaders, and customers throughout the organization.
• Participate in expert level troubleshooting and resolve problems through root cause analysis, data and system investigation.
• Contributes to design and architecture discussions with Principals and Architects.
• Leads targeted cross-functional improvement efforts and mentors more junior software engineers.
• Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective on existing solutions.
• Work independently with minimal guidance. You may lead projects or project steps within a broader project or have accountability for ongoing activities or objectives.
• Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
Qualifications
Required qualifications for this position include: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field with 5 years of experience as noted below; OR an Associate’s degree in Computer/Science/Engineering or related field with 7 years of experience.
- Have in-depth knowledge of software engineering with experience coding applications or services in a high-level language (C, C++, Golang, Java, C# etc.) and a basic knowledge of related fields.
- Demonstrated problem solving and time management skills. Possesses strong technical aptitude for designing and implementing software solutions. Experience with modern application development frameworks.
- Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.
- Deep hands-on technical expertise, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with Agile software development techniques.

- Preferred qualifications for this position include:
- Master's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field.
- Ability to use a wide variety of open-source technologies and cloud-based services.
- Experience writing software for the cloud (GCP, AWS, Azure).
- Experience in databases, analytics, big data systems or business intelligence products.
- Experience building high-performance, highly available and scalable distributed systems.
- Experience developing software for healthcare related industries.
- Experience with multiple coding languages related to data or application development.
- The IDMP Access Control team leverages C# extensively for the backend and API development.
- The team also does front-end development using and JavaScript, jQuery, C#, CSS, and HTML.
- Experience with full stack development and deployment.
- The IDMP Access Control team is responsible for developing the front-end login page that all patients and external customers use when accessing Mayo Clinic.
- The team does backend development to align with the API first model. All functionality of the platform is done through APIs. This development is done leveraging C#.
- The team also has implemented various solutions leveraging many different Azure technologies to provide scalable solutions:
- Azure App Functions
- Azure PaaS for application hosting
- Experience with data technologies, streaming, processing using Big Data or Cloud Native technologies.
- Access Control leverage many Microsoft Azure cloud-based technologies:
- Azure App Functions
- Azure Active Directory B2C
- Azure Blob Storage
- Azure SQL
- Azure Front Door
- Microsoft SQL Server
- Enterprise Service Bus –integration with cloud-based technologies
- Apigee API management – including unique management of authentication for the patient experience
- Epic hosted integration
- Identity Federation - Single Sign On (SSO) – SAML, OIDC and Oauth2
- Mail Integration
- LexisNexis – Identity Proofing
- CDN – Content Delivery Network
- Software development for hybrid or multi-cloud (including Containers)
- Access Control supports multiple projects with identity directory stores, relational databases and unstructured logging data all located across Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and on-premises
- The team is migrating all on-prem capabilities to the cloud to better resiliency and easier deployments
- Strong skills in automation, Software Development Pipelines, and CI/CD.
- The Access Control team leverages automation extensively to provide monitoring and alerting
- Uptime is critical and the team has extensive automated alerting and monitoring to quickly identify an outage/impairment as well as identifying where the issue is
- Azure DevOps is used to build and deploy code automatically
- Experience in modern application frameworks.

- The team also manages many integrations with other systems that supply critical data to the platform for a seamless login experience. Integration with:

- Experience product, software, or data quality through automation methods.
- Native IOS or Android application development.
- No direct iOS and Android development, but the team has provided extensive support to the Mobile App team to help them integrate and leverage IDMP capabilities
- Experience with API or web services development.
- The Access Control team built the platform using API first and that model is still used today. The entire platform leverages APIs for all internal and external integrations and calls
