Responsibilities
The Legal Specialist is responsible for initiating and producing complex work at a high level of competence in one or more areas of law in support of attorneys and/or clients. Work product is self-directed and requires significant independent judgment and discretion. Advanced knowledge and understanding of practice areas, processes, procedures, rules and regulations is required. The Legal Specialist provides leadership and is considered an expert in one of more areas of law; preforms legal research, educates and updates clients/departments on specific legal topics; and may take the lead on significant projects. The specific duties of the Legal Specialist may vary based on department needs. The Legal Specialist in the position will have a primary focus on employment law and legal matters concerning accredited educational programs. Health law experience is strongly preferred.

This position is primarily remote. However, this individual must live within driving distance from our AZ, FL, Rochester, MN, or Eau Claire, WI Mayo Clinic site.

Qualifications
Qualified candidates will meet one of the following education requirements: a four-year degree and a paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) certified program; a bachelor’s degree from an ABA-approved paralegal educational program; or a J.D. degree. Five years of relevant legal experience required. A J.D. degree may be substituted for required experience. A bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years of senior-level paralegal experience, may be substituted for all previously-noted requirements. Completion of PACE (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam), other professional designations (advanced certification in specific practice area), or a Master's degree preferred. Completion of the Mayo Clinic Project Management Course or equivalent preferred.
