Position description
We seek a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher with expertise in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Machine Learning or similar field to join the Neurology Artificial Intelligence Program (NAIP). The primary focus of this position is on the development of automated tools to detect disease from speech/voice recordings, including preprocessing, training of machine learning models, and validation of predictive models. A secondary focus is on optimizing tools for remote capture using mobile devices at scale.
NAIP is a growing group of clinician-investigators, data scientists, and software engineers building AI tools to be used in clinical care and patient centered research. We are embedded within the clinical practice at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and well connected to ongoing research programs within neurology. This position offers the opportunity to translate world leading domain expertise in neurology and speech-language pathology into clinically impactful digital tools. This role is ideal for someone with a passion for advancing healthcare through the use of technology, including machine learning. Initial projects will focus on degenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and Lou Gehrig’s disease. Related projects will examine other neurologic diseases like stroke, brain tumors, and auto-immune disease.
Essential Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Machine Learning or similar field
- Strong programming skills (e.g. Python)
- Track record of publications and conference presentations
Experience in one of more of the following is desired:
- Google Cloud Platform
- Recording, preprocessing, and manipulation of audio data
- Machine learning on audio data
- Collaborative development on Github
The successful candidate will be appointed at the Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow level, commensurate with experience. Research and Senior Research Fellow positions at Mayo Clinic are temporary positions intended to provide training and education in research. Qualified individuals will demonstrate the potential for research as evidenced by their training and peer-reviewed publications and should become competitive for national research grants. Proof of English proficiency is required for J-1 Research Fellows or Senior Research Fellows sponsored by Mayo Clinic.

- Proof of doctoral degree (copy of diploma or final transcript with English translation, if applicable) or a letter from your university's Registrar office indicating you have fulfilled all doctoral program requirements and are eligible to graduate.
Qualifications
Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. Research Fellow is appropriate for individuals who have completed no more than one prior postdoctoral fellowship, at Mayo Clinic or elsewhere.
