Position description
The Research Support Technician functions as an interdisciplinary team member to perform duties related to the support of clinical research trials. Carries out designated research activities on CRTU units, throughout Mayo campus (downtown and SMC) and off-campus. Works closely with nursing staff with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care, which complements the nursing practice under the supervision of a registered nurse. The Research Support Technician carries out designated activities that are within those functions limited by law to unlicensed nursing personnel. Assists in complex (i.e. interventional, therapeutic, greater than minimal risk) studies with direction but does not have overall responsibility for these studies. Applies knowledge and expertise in patient care to perform a variety of duties in support of physicians and/or registered nurse (RN), administrative, and/or management staff for a wide array of Clinical Research Protocols. The Research Support Technician collects data through observation and communicates information to assist the physician and/or RN in patient assessment. The Research Support Technician is expected to deliver care in accordance with the research protocol and standards of care. Is responsible for research specimen collection and specimen processing. Prepares and labels all collection tubes and aliquot tubes used during the course of research studies. Performs phlebotomy techniques, and starts IV lines both for administration of medication and collection of specimens. Collects samples via both venipuncture and draw lines. Must use a combination of independent judgment and closely following written instructions to determine the process and to accurately prepare lab specimens and containers with reagents as required for a specific study. Centrifuges and aliquots multiple samples using protocol specific parameters simultaneously. Works closely with study teams to ensure that the correct collection and lab supplies are available for each unique study visit. Is responsible for preparing Fecal Microbiota Transplant samples within an Anaerobic Chamber. Performs ECGs on study subjects. Provides coverage in the Health Unit Coordinator role when staffing levels require. Performs point of care testing as required by research protocols. Must carry out techniques independently. Assists in the maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. Troubleshoots instrumentation as required. Must use critical thinking skills and implement quality control programs within the laboratory. Potential to be cross trained in performing body composition analysis, including Xtreme CT and DEXA.
Qualifications
Requires a 2-year degree in a science or health-related field with experience in a clinical environment or 3-5 years of relevant work experience. Previous phlebotomy or medical assisting experience is preferred. A certification as a Certified Bone Densitometry Technologist (CBDT) from the International Society of Clinical Densitometry is preferred for individuals cross trained in body composition analysis. Must be adaptable and well organized. Able to work independently as well as with a team. Must have good interpersonal skills when working with physicians, co-workers, and study participants/patients. Must possess good analytical problem-solving skills and have meticulous attention to detail.
