Responsibilities

In charge of compliance of all facility operating permits on the shift. Conducts maintenance of equipment on facility grounds. Understands the mechanical and electrical workings of the equipment. Is able to operate powered and hand tools. Performs shift checklists, required by the MPCA, USEPA, USDA and City of Rochester to detect operational issues and facilitates repairs to keep equipment compliant with all regulations. Troubleshoots and repairs waste combustor, wet scrubber, variable frequency drives (VFD's), wet electrostatic precipitator, wastewater treatment system, hydraulics, urea injection and caustic systems. Responsible for maintenance of boiler, autoclaves, smoke eater, hydraulics, pneumatics, electrical systems, propane blending system, storage tank instrumentation, flow systems, motors, pumps, pH probes, flow meters, limit switches, actuators, fans, burners, thermocouples, differential pressure sensors, automatic valves, oxygen reducing potential meters, level indicators, metering pumps and floor cleaning equipment. Manages animal waste deliveries to correctly operate the pathological incinerator. Works safely around corrosive chemicals, automated belts and machinery, and potentially high heat environments. Responsible for waste/boiler/cooling tower water quality tests. Operates the high-pressure boiler to provide steam for the smoke eater and infectious waste sterilizers. Performs 2-hour safety checks for the boiler. Helps with the sterilization of infectious waste. Fills in for Systems Operators. Provides training and shares knowledge with new and current employees. In charge of all plant chemistry analysis and control. Responsible for plant security during the evening and overnight shift, or if the Plant Manager is absent. Provides technical assistance for the repair and modification of plant systems. Is able to fabricate and weld parts as needed. Proficient making and installing new hydraulic hoses and fluid tube. Responsible for data collection for system improvement, troubleshooting and record keeping. Use and understand the Standard Operating Procedures for all systems and to become a Fully Certified Operator. Attends on and off-site training for new equipment, MPCA certification, USDA training, electrical, safety, and permit changes. Responsible for quarterly ash sampling sequence and associated record keeping. Coordinates the ordering of parts and supplies. Gives feedback on job performance for evaluations and promotions. Responsible for maintaining plant cleanliness. Requires the ability to work rotating shifts and overtime, as needed, including some weekends.

Qualifications

Building Utilities Mechanic or equivalent degree, or HS/GED required along with 4 years of relevant work experience. Ability to manage a team while thinking swiftly and clearly in stressful situations during facility challenges is highly desired. Have industrial mechanical abilities. Troubleshooting skills and ability to read and understand schematics are essential. Demonstrate good electrical understanding and ability. Experience using multi-meters, megohmmeter, manometer and hand held meters required. Industrial maintenance experience is strongly desired. Electrical experience is desired. Ability to operate a fork lift, bobcat, front-end loader, articulating arm and floor sweeperMinnesota Waste Combustor Operator Certificate or achieve within 1 ½ years of hire. Minnesota 2nd Class B Engineer License or achieve within 1 year of hire. Minnesota Maintenance Electrician license or achieve within 8 years of hire). Must have or be able to acquire BLS certification within 6 months of hire. Must obtain Fully Certified Operator status within 2 years of hire.

Schedule Details

Rotating shift. Can change with business needs. 8:00am to 4:30pm, 3:45pm to 12:15am, 11:45pm to 8:15am. On-Call weekends and holidays every 9 to 10 weeks. May change for business needs.

Weekend Schedule

Every 12 weeks for 2 to 4 hours. Most weekends are not staffed. Can change on business needs. Occasional un-scheduled weekend work.
