Position description
The Vice Chair for Research in DLMP is responsible for providing the Department’s overall research strategy , leadership, vision, direction and development for research structure, programs, and staff. The Vice Chair is also responsible for oversight of all aspects of research through collaboration with institutional leadership of the Practice, Research, and Education shields.

Specific Responsibilities:
• Increase the preeminence of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology research activities and brand.
• Lead the department’s research committee and shield by implementing, monitoring, reporting, and adjusting its research strategic plan.
• Oversee and ensure integration of departmental research with the clinical practice and education shields.
• Serve as a liaison between the Department and Institutional research. Advocate for the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology research at Institutional levels, with other Departments, Centers, and IMPs.
• Oversee and ensure department resources are allocated to optimally support and advance the research mission, vision, and strategy.
• Facilitate the growth of extramural funding (e.g. development, grants and/or contracts).

• Maintain overall accountability for the development, management, and adherence of the
departmental research budget to ensure organizational fiscal standards and expectations
are met.
• Communicate and advocate for the department’s research vision, actions, and performance
within the department and across the institution.
• Work collaboratively with departmental leaders to ensure effective communication,
coordination, and integration across the three shields.
• Establish a nimble innovation model to accelerate discovery-translation-application,
leveraging both internal resources and external partnerships.
• Identify research faculty expertise needed in to achieve the departmental strategy and
facilitate the growth, recruitment, and retention of talent.
• Represent Mayo Clinic Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at national and
international meetings as appropriate.

Physician/scientist with extensive expertise in research is required. Previous or current grant(s) through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is preferred. A track record of research excellence and previous leadership experience in academic medicine is required. Academic rank of professor is required. Leadership experience and expertise to establish a vision for the Department, advance the scientific goals and manage a complex organization is required. Demonstrated excellence in planning, interpersonal, leadership, and written and oral communication skills are required. Ability to innovate, lead boldly, develop, implement, and promote integrative research and practice activities across the shields in a rapidly growing and changing organization is required.

License or certification
The Vice Chair will be a pre-eminent physician scientist with an established track record in
federally funded research.
• M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or equivalent health professional degrees with experience at the level
of an endowed professor.
• Nationally and internationally recognized.
• Broad knowledge of current scientific, medical, and technological fields
• Demonstrated administrative and management skills.
• Track-record in developing competitive basic, clinical and/or translational research and
educational programs.
• Experience with the development, implementation and/or execution of strategic and
business plans.
• Effective oral and written communication, and excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to articulate a vision and empower colleagues.
• Evidence of effective professional relationship building, both internal and external.
• Substantive experience with industry, including an understanding of the
pharma/biotech industry, venture capital, and technology translation.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Evidence of senior leadership roles intra and extramurally, such as senior advisory
committees, professional organizations, and editorial board.
• Strong alignment with Mayo primary and core values.
