Position description
The Cancer Registrar II demonstrates expert job knowledge and applies current coding regulations, policies, and procedures along with effective decision-making and problem solving skills for all registry functions. Opportunities to abstract cases may be available at Mayo Clinic sites in Arizona, Florida, and/or Minnesota.



Identifies, organizes, maintains, analyzes, abstracts, and follows up the medical record in complex multimedia systems of all patient cases that have been diagnosed as having cancer or certain benign tumors seen at Mayo within the guidelines of the applicable state requirements for Arizona, Florida, and/or Minnesota and the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). Performs complex data entry utilizing specialized software. Responsible for complete and accurate entry of data for cases of all levels, focusing primarily on advanced and intermediate level cases utilizing established quality control methods. Maintains compliance with Cancer Registry related policies and procedures. Maintains a current knowledge of staging, coding, and abstracting standards and requirements and understands prior coding rules as they relate to the analysis of older data. Assists with the performance of epidemiology disease-related research and report writing; serves as a resource for the design and operation of the registry.

Qualifications
-Associate's degree or equivalent in an allied health field commensurate with established CTR credentials.

-Minimum three years of hospital cancer registry experience with demonstrated understanding of coding and abstraction of data.

Additional qualifications
-Demonstrated knowledge of Medical Coding (ICD-9 and CPT), ICD-O Coding, American College of Surgeons Facility Oncology Registry Data Standards (FORDS) Manual, Multiple Primary and Histology Manual, Collaborative Staging Manual, AJCC, and SEER Staging.

-Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills.

-Strong computer and keyboarding skills including proficiency with Microsoft applications and Internet research.

-Experience with cancer registry software and electronic record systems.

-Strong organization and problem solving skills.

Must be able to:

--Adapt to and demonstrate proficiency in understanding new technologies and rules that are integral to performing assigned tasks specific to location rules.

--Demonstrate knowledge of treatment standards of care and clinical trials for cancer primaries for all levels of cases (beginning to advanced, multiple sites and histologies, multiple stages of disease).

--Demonstrate knowledge of statistical data analysis as it relates to registry data.

--Work efficiently and complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy.

--Meet deadlines, adapt to multiple projects as assigned by Supervisor, and work independently and as part of a team.

--Maintain strict confidentiality of information.

--Work professionally and build rapport with others at all levels of responsibility within the Mayo organization as well as at other health care institutions and organizations external to Mayo.

-Experience working with an ACoS Approved Cancer Program and/or NCI Cancer Program preferred.

-Experience working in a health related field in one or more of the following areas preferred: Medical Records, Coding, Quality Assurance, Statistical Data Analysis, and/or Clinical Trials.

License or certification
-Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credential.

Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) preferred.

Compensation Detail
Required education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The hourly pay range is $24.86 - $37.29 per hour.
