Faculty Position in Microfluidics

Physiology & Biomedical Engineering
Position description
The Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering and the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine are seeking to recruit an energetic and visionary investigator who will introduce, advance and implement microfluidic approaches integrating the emerging area of microbiome-based markers with the traditional immune/host cellular markers in pursuit of diagnostics. The successful candidate is expected to establish a dynamic research program across the continuum from discovery through clinical application relevant to the microbiome and microbiology. Research areas of interest include but are not limited to: 1) Microfluidic separation of microbes from host tissue; 2) Microfluidic-based analyses, including definition of microbial pathogenicity, responsiveness to therapy and characterization of host-microbe interactions; 3) Microfluidics platforms for high throughput profiling (e.g. sequencing) of diverse cell types including microbes; 4) Scalable solutions for technology translation towards advanced clinical diagnostics that will enhance clinical medicine.

The benefits of this position include long-term faculty salary support and travel budget as well as a competitive startup package with support for personnel and equipment. Additional benefits of being at Mayo Clinic include intramural funding opportunities for research projects and instrumentation. The successful candidate will have opportunities to not only establish and maintain a highly recognized research program, but also to integrate with existing institutional strengths in microbiome and infectious diseases, biosensing techologies, genomics, and laboratory medicine and pathology. The candidate will be strongly encouraged to explore entrepreneurial opportunities aligned with Mayo’s 2030 vision of Bold Forward strategy to Cure, Connect, Transform.

The Department emphasizes a culture of trans-disciplinary collaborations between scientists, engineers and physicians to drive ideas from basic concepts to clinical practice. Current major areas of emphasis include: Biosensing and Instrumentation, Biomedical Imaging, Biomechanics, Physiology, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, Modeling and Data Analytics. The successful candidate will have a primary staff appointment in the Department but will be expected to actively seek out collaborations with researchers, physician scientists and clinical investigators with other departments and research areas across the major Mayo Clinic campuses in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida.

Mayo Clinic is an integrated, multidisciplinary academic medical center with comprehensive programs in medical education and research that span across three group practice sites. We support a vibrant research enterprise, with programs in basic, translational, clinical, and population sciences. The successful applicant will have access to the resources of 22 Research Centers including the Center for Biomedical Discovery, Center for Individualized Medicine and the Center for Regenerative Medicine. Mayo Clinic has a large number of world class laboratory and state-of-the-art shared resource facilities. We offer a highly competitive compensation package with sustained intramural funding, capital equipment funding, technical and computational resources, and exceptional benefits.

Applications should include a CV, a description of research focus, and the names of five references. Specific questions related to the posting should be directed to:

The deadline for full consideration is December 1, 2019, although applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

License or certification

Credentials of a successful candidate will include a doctoral degree (e.g. PhD, MD, or ScD) with background in a relevant science (e.g., microbiology, analytical chemistry) or engineering (e.g. biomedical engineering). The ideal candidate would have an established track record of relevant research accomplishments and scholarship exemplified by publications and/or significant extramural funding, leadership skills and interpersonal and communication skills that foster and/or have resulted in multidisciplinary collaborations. Consideration will be given to candidates at the Assistant, Associate and Full Professor level.
