Position description
In this role employees will have direct patient contact. The primary function is to transport patients, visitors and patient related items throughout the Mayo Clinic campus in a safe and efficient manner. Employees will have frequent interaction with nurses, radiology techs, desk staff, door attendants and others.

Areas of service may include but are not limited to transporting patients to and from the following; multiple building entrances upon dismissal or admission, inpatient hospital rooms, psychiatric floors, admissions, pharmacy, the emergency department, and outpatient clinical settings such as appointments, test areas, waiting rooms.

Staff will receive primary work assignments via an iPhone and pager; functionality to work independently and as a team member with minimal supervision or direction, as well as knowledge and/or experience with the use of a handheld device Proper input and management of transport requests may be required via computers and working with dispatch staff via telephone.

Employees in this role will stand and/or walk 10-12 miles per 8 hour shift and frequently push/pull patients up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds. Employees must demonstrate proficiency in the safe operation of multiple types of motorized patient transport equipment which require exceptional fine motor skills and must have full use of hands, ability to do repetitive wrist and elbow movements, repetitive foot motions and trunk rotate/twist/reach actions. Disinfecting equipment after each patient use and maintenance as needed through the appropriate channels. Performing wheelchair roundups to General Service storage locations or designated floors is a daily task.

Employees will transport patients who require the use of oxygen, intravenous pumps, wound vacs and/or other special equipment, assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, and will perform correct patient identification by utilizing two patient identifiers (name and date of birth). When a patient is on oxygen, it must be confirmed with a nurse that the patient has a minimum of 30 minutes of oxygen before transportation. Use a slider board and slider sheet to transfer patients to/from beds and/or stretchers with assistance. Confirming with staff and adhere to the medical isolation precautions and protocols. This requires additional hands-on training.

Employees will demonstrate strong verbal communication and customer service skills; specifically by providing detailed verbal communication to appropriate staff during the drop off and pick up of both inpatient and sedated patient populations.

Working hours may include days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends with rotating days off. Staff may be required to attend meetings outside of their normal work schedule and/or assist in the training of new employees. A minimum of 80 hours of on the job training is necessary to perform basic job functions.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Previous customer service experience required. Previous hospital, clinical or patient care experience preferred. Must be able to work independently and in a group setting with minimal supervision. Requires exceptional verbal communication skills as well as telephone and human relation skills to interact with patients, guests and staff. Must communicate effectively in a professional and respectful manner during high-stress situations. Must be able to adapt to unpredictable and stressful situations, while maintaining a calm and pleasant demeanor. Strong problem solving skills are necessary. Must be able to demonstrate exceptional initiative and a proven ability to quickly respond to customer needs in a fast paced work environment. Basic computer skills are required, with proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.

Compensation Detail
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $16.92 per hour.
