Position description
The Instrument Core Technician is responsible for all duties of Instrument Technician as well as performing delegated activities to support the operating room team in the care of the surgical patient in the operating room core(s). Under the supervision of the CSPD Leadership Team, the Instrument Core Technician has direct communication and service liaison responsibility to the operating room. The Instrument Core Technician prepares and delivers medical/surgical supplies, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures. Cleans, packages, and processes surgical equipment and instrumentation and scopes, as well as maintains inventory and storage of supplies in the sterile core. Core Techs are also responsible to communicate the need for the development of case cart requisitions.

Practices aseptic technique and may assist with the opening of sterile trays or items as needed and under the direction of the operating room surgical technician and/or circulating nurse. The Instrument Core Tech demonstrates knowledge of clinical applications and has knowledge of surgical technology, utilizing medical and computer applications.

Central Service technicians work in compliance with best practices and standards established by: The Joint Commission, AAMI, IAHSCMM, AORN, OSHA, DOT, WHO, FDA, EPA, and HIPPA.
High School graduate or GED required.
A minimum of one year of instrumentation and/or core technician experience in a hospital setting required.
Graduation from an accredited and/or hospital approved sterile processing program and certified through IAHSCMM or CBSPD.
Additional qualifications
Advance sterile processing knowledge usually obtained with >3 years experience preferred. Previous experience in surgical cores desired.

Knowledge of specific sterilization modalities and complex advanced processing systems including: gravity displacement, dynamic air-removal, low temperature hydrogen peroxide gas plasma and Ethylene oxide, DSD, CER, Pass Through Medivator Advantage, Astra Tee, GUS, Scope Buddy Plus, Aqua Sink, process and efficacy testing, and cutting edge specialty trial and multi service instrumentation and trays is preferred.
Knowledge of High, Low and Intermediate disinfection levels is preferred.

Progressive computer knowledge for advanced computerized instrument tracking systems, sterilization, assembly case information, inventory management and individual productivity data is preferred.

Knowledge of progressive computer technology, human anatomy, surgical terminology, infection control, microbiology, and safety and risk control is preferred.
Proven interpersonal skills (including ability to receive and give constructive feedback), effective and concise verbal and written communication skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships is preferred.

Internal applicants are required to attach their three most recent performance appraisals.
License or certification
Certification through IAHSCMM or CBSPD is required and must be maintained thereafter.

Compensation Detail
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $18.17 per hour.
