Why Mayo Clinic
Mayo Clinic is seeking solution architects with broad knowledge of Epic to provide Epic solution expertise to the Mayo Clinic business and practice, specifically related to optimization, innovation, and new initiatives. The resources will field questions and respond with solutions to complex business and clinical practice scenarios requiring knowledge of Epic functionality across multiple applications.

The architects will have general focus areas. One solution architect will be for the Ambulatory/Clinic setting, one for the Hospital setting, and one assigned to our Research and Kern Center. The Kern Center research is carried out across Mayo Clinic through a number of innovative programs and initiatives to improve health and health care delivery.

The resource will work with other IT application architects, Informatics, Epic, and the practice to understand needs and determine potential short and long term solutions.

The architect will:
  • Seek answers to questions from EHR leaders regarding complex or emerging Epic functions.
  • Partner with the practice in optimization and innovation initiatives that span multiple applications and/or platforms.
  • Evaluate and recommend solutions involving Epic functionality; maximize use of existing functionality before recommending development.
  • Effectively engage partners from informatics, revenue cycle, and Epic to develop solutions.
The ideal architect will have a history of responsiveness, resourcefulness, strong customer service skills, knowledge in multiple Epic applications, deep interest in continuous learning, involved in Epic XGM/user forums, and be adept at working across teams.

Travel to Florida, Arizona, Minnesota, and our Midwest health systems is likely throughout the year.
Position description
Proactively assumes a team leadership role to direct and coordinate the work of other staff. Assigns tasks to staff taking into consideration workload balancing, skill sets, technical knowledge, and criticality of the tasks. Serves as a consultant or tutor in many specific technical areas of expertise to staff throughout the Department of Information Technology (IT). Serves on appropriate committees, acts as a resource to institutional committees, on an ad hoc basis, provides consultation in their area of expertise, and facilitates institutional work groups. Leads technical planning for areas supported by work unit as part of yearly division planning, and serves as an active member or facilitator of technical workgroups needed to advance project objectives. Leads committees to establish technical standards, promote integration of data, and/or coordination of projects across work units. Responsible and accountable for the on-time completion of tasks and projects as assigned, demonstrating a commitment to meet deadlines and priorities. Provides leadership in the technical design, system architecture, design, selection, and application of the of information systems resources to satisfy the requirements of the systems. Participates in major technical decisions, develops technical proposals that consider alternatives and business case, gains needed institutional approvals, and works effectively across departmental organizations gaining consensus of stakeholders. Is recognized beyond their division as a technical expert and is sought out for their in-depth knowledge. Also, is knowledgeable and applies a broad range of current technologies and recognizes how they fit into Mayo’s environment. May participate in industry committees or organizations.

Facilitates system technical reviews within the institution to ensure appropriate technical architecture and design, including understanding and applying concepts of enterprise architecture to ensure systems align, adhere and integrate within Mayo Information Technology enterprise environment. Works independently on all projects and assignments escalating to others based upon scope of authority, producing dependable results that consistently meet objectives. May be required to provide 24/7 on-call support. Interfaces routinely with colleagues who may be located at any of the Mayo Group practices to perform job responsibilities requiring virtual collaboration and partnership.
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years’ experience including 5 years’ of demonstrated technical experience and 3 years of demonstrated leadership experience.

Ability to meet the position's travel expectations.

Additional qualifications
Masters degree in applicable field preferred. Broad experience with the Epic Platform and Mayo Clinic build. Broad knowledge of the Mayo Clinic practice, research, and education areas preferred. Epic certification strongly preferred.

Exposure to managing both custom developed and vendor-supplied applications.

Compensation Detail
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.  The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approx $3,883 based on a full-time position.
