Position description
The Legal Specialist is responsible for initiating and producing complex work at a high level of competence in one or more areas of law in support of attorneys and/or clients. Work product is self-directed and requires significant independent judgment and discretion. Advanced knowledge and understanding of practice areas, processes, procedures, rules and regulations is required. The specific duties of the Legal Specialist may vary based on department needs. Subject matter areas may include but are not limited to general health law; business/corporate transactions; employment law; drugs and devices; billing compliance; fraud and abuse; scope of practice and professional licensure related regulatory work. The Legal Specialist provides leadership and is considered an expert in one or more areas of law; educates and updates clients/departments on specific legal topics; and may take the lead on significant projects. The Legal Specialist in this position will have a primary focus on general health law and health care regulatory compliance issues. The Legal Specialist will be expected to perform complex legal research on matters related to provider scope of practice; controlled substance prescribing; fraud, abuse and waste; CMS, DEA and FDA regulations and guidance, among others. Health law regulatory work experience is strongly preferred.

*This is a remote telework position until Covid-19 pandemic telework protocols are resolved. Post pandemic, this position may require onsite support based on business needs. Individual must be within driving distance to one of the Mayo Clinic campuses.

Qualifications
Qualified candidates will meet one of the following education requirements: a four-year degree and a paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) certified program; a bachelor’s degree from an ABA-approved paralegal educational program; or a J.D. degree. Five years of relevant legal experience required. A J.D. degree may be substituted for required experience. A bachelor’s degree plus 5 years of relevant legal experience, including at least 3 years of senior-level paralegal experience, may be substituted for all previously-noted requirements.
License or certification
Completion of PACE (Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam), other professional designations (advanced certification in specific practice area), or a Master's degree preferred. Completion of the Mayo Clinic Project Management Course or equivalent preferred.

Compensation Detail
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.  The minimum salary every 2 weeks is approximately $3019.20, based on a full-time position.
