Position description
The Hospital Medicine Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant works collaboratively with the Hospitalist physician to deliver medical care to hospitalized patients. The focus of the job includes providing acute hospital care to complex medical patients.
This position is a SEMN regional position with primary work site in Owatonna. SEMN Sites include I-90 Corridor (Austin-Albert Lea), River Corridor (Red Wing, Cannon Falls, Lake City) and I-35 Corridor (Austin).

Additional responsibilities include consulting on orthopedic, general surgery, and occasionally OB/GYN patients requiring pre-operative evaluation and/or management of medical comorbidities. A high level of autonomy is expected. The NP / PA provides comprehensive bedside assessment, ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosis, prescription of pharmacologic agents and treatments and non-pharmacologic therapies as well as documentation of patient care. The NP / PA will work with the interdisciplinary care team in coordinating discharge planning and facilitate the patient's transfer of care back to the primary provider. The NP / PA will consult and make referrals to physicians and other members of the health care team as appropriate.

The Owatonna hospital will have 22 med-surgical beds and 4 ICU beds. The NPPA would team with 1 physician Hospitalist working 7a-3p and provide in-patient care autonomously and in collaboration with MD’s, including care for ICU patients. The ICU is remotely monitored 24/7 by an Enhanced Critical Care service. For questions arising for ICU patients the Enhanced Critical Care provider will be immediately available by phone or via video teleconference in the patient room.

Additionally there will be a 3 month training period including rotation at some of the larger Mayo Clinic sites.
Qualifications
One to two years experience in the care of medical/surgical inpatients or emergency medicine is required, but will consider new graduates with prior hospital experience.

Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license (or eligible) and certification (or eligible to be certified) as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP

Or graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (or eligible)

Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges

ACLS & BLS certification

Strong written and oral communication skills are required and must have demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.
