The Mayo Clinic Department of Public Affairs offers internships that provide hands-on work experience for students in the fields of communications, journalism, public relations and marketing.

Serving the needs of audiences that include employees, patients and the public, the Department of Public Affairs offers a broad spectrum of experience in the field of corporate communications.
Department of Public Affairs staff members use a diverse range of media, including the Internet, intranet, print and electronic publications, and audio and video recordings, to effectively convey institutional messages. Interns gain practical knowledge through collaboration with experienced colleagues.

Interns with the Department of Public Affairs at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota, gain work experience in a broad range of corporate communications at an internationally respected medical center.

Typically, interns are asked to:

  • Conduct interviews and write articles for Mayo publications and websites
  • Develop communication plans for internal clients
  • Write news releases and respond to media inquiries
  • Assist with news conferences as well as coordinate and supervise media interviews on campus
  • Research, write, edit and coordinate production of general information materials for patients
  • Write scripts and coordinate production of audiovisual presentations and videos
  • Research and develop Web content


Eligibility criteria for the Public Affairs Internship:

  • Journalism, mass communications or public relations majors preferred
  • College junior, senior or graduate standing
  • Strong writing skills
  • Computer skills
  • Major GPA of 3.5 and overall GPA of 3.2
  • Completion of basic courses in news writing, script writing, marketing or public relations helpful
  • Previous internship experience preferred

Application Process

If available, internships are offered in the fall (16 weeks) or summer (12 weeks). Starting dates will be negotiated to complement the student's academic schedule.
