Perioperative Nursing Program

The Perioperative Nursing Program at Mayo Clinic in Florida is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary for a nursing career in the operating room. This 12-week program offers the high-quality didactic and clinical experiences needed to help you become a well-rounded, fully competent perioperative registered nurse.

Twice a year, Mayo Clinic accepts up to four students into the Perioperative Nursing Program on a competitive basis. This ensures you'll receive a comprehensive educational experience with close one-on-one instruction.

Upon acceptance into the program, you'll be assigned to a paid nursing position in an operating room and be eligible for benefits. Clinical experiences are held at Mayo Clinic's hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., where you'll assist with general and specialty surgery.

Timeline
During the 12-week Perioperative Nursing Program, you'll typically work eight-hour days, five days a week. After completing the program, you'll begin individualized unit orientation with an assigned preceptor who works collaboratively with the unit-based educator. The average length of orientation with a preceptor is another 12 weeks.
Graduation and Certification
After completing the courses and receiving a passing score on the comprehensive final exam, you'll be awarded 40 contact hours from the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses. Perioperative nurses are eligible to take the perioperative certification exam after completing two years of perioperative nursing.
