Mentorship

Application Process
Students should connect with their school to start the application process to ensure eligibility. Participating schools have been provided a copy of the application and guidelines. Should your school wish to participate in the program, have an educator contact Career Exploration to start the process.

The High School Mentorship provides high school students in the 11th and 12th grades the opportunity to learn and work alongside professionals. High School Mentorship exposes students to various health care fields and careers. Students will find practical, real-world applications for their academic knowledge through in-person or virtual learning experiences.

Career Festival

Mayo Clinic High School Health Care Career Festival
The annual Health Care Career Festival offers high school students in 11th and 12th grades enrolled in participating southeastern Minnesota schools the opportunity to explore a wide range of exciting career opportunities in a festive, engaging atmosphere. It's a fun day of learning, sharing, and hands-on experience that provides career awareness education, information on career fields, and opportunities to use patient care equipment.

Discover Mayo Clinic

Discover Mayo Clinic provides students in the 10th–12th grades interested in health-related careers with the opportunity to engage with professionals in a hands-on and engaging atmosphere. Topics and careers have included: Histology, Surgical Skills, Emergency Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Casting.
Application Process
Open to students regardless of physical location. Availability for in-person attendance will be limited. However, students can select to participate virtually if they cannot attend in-person. Registration information will be sent to schools at least four weeks prior to the start of Discover Mayo Clinic. Should you have any questions, please email Career Exploration.
This event is typically held on Monday nights in October and November for seven weeks.

Virtual Career Tours are pre-recorded videos that highlight various careers at Mayo Clinic. Viewers get to see professionals in the field, see what a typical day is like, and learn about what it takes to become a professional in that field. These videos are intended for high school students but are useful for those who may wish to change or confirm careers. These 25-minute videos are free to anyone who wants to view them. Visit our video library to see if we have a video that interests you. New videos will be uploaded to that site as we complete them.

Mayo Clinic CARES

Arizona high schools students (9th–11th grades) can participate in Mayo Clinic CARES (Career Advancement Research and Education Summer) Arizona program. This innovative high school pathway program is conducted annually each summer. High schoolers apply through a rigorous selection process and are selected to participate in this five-week program. Goals include: 1) Enabling high school students to experience career opportunities across the health care industry, 2) Providing students with hands-on experience in health care, and 3) Facilitating exploration and discovery of their career and personality strengths. While all current freshman, sophomore, and juniors are invited to apply, students from any of the following areas are especially encouraged: backgrounds that are underrepresented in health care nationally, first generation college-bound students, Upward Bound and STEAM participants, underserved students receiving free or reduced school lunches, those socioeconomically disadvantaged, and those with an interest in health equity and/or community outreach. Students are exposed to a wide variety of health care careers along with being matched with mentors.

Medical Experience (MedEx) Program

High School Application Process
Qualifications—
To be considered for the program, students must:
- Volunteer a minimum of 30 hours at Mayo Clinic Health System. To begin the process of becoming a volunteer, please visit this link and complete a volunteer application. 20 of the 30 hours must be completed before the start of application process. Any remaining hours may be completed after the application deadline but before beginning the program.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be at least a junior in high school.
- Be seriously considering a career as a physician.
How to apply:
- Complete an application available from Volunteer Services, high school guidance counselor or Medical Education.
- Write an essay.
- Submit two letters of reference.
Timeline:
High School applications are due in the spring; rotations are completed during summer only.
Locations:
Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire campus.
The Medical Experience Program at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire provides medical experiences to high school and college students who are considering careers as physicians. During the program, students job shadow physicians in a variety of specialties in a clinic setting.

College Application Process
Qualifications—
To be considered for the program, students must:

Career Observation

High School Application Process

Career Observation provides high school (10th-12th) and college undergraduates the opportunity to learn and observe professionals. Through observation and connecting with professionals, students will confirm their career interests.
College Undergraduate Application Process
College students looking to complete an observation will need to find a host willing to let the student observe them. Once you have secured a host, contact Career Exploration to start the process.
If you are looking to observe a Physician/Scientist, you will follow a different process. You will have to find a Physician/Scientist who is willing to let you observe them in practice. Once they have agreed to be your host, the Physician/Scientist will need to contact Education Business Services for next steps.
