Administrative Internship Program

Each year, Mayo Clinic hires a cohort of graduate-level administrative interns with opportunities spanning all our destination and health system hub sites. Mayo’s Administrative Internship Program provides the opportunity for first year graduate students to gain in-depth project experience and contribute to our strategic priorities in a meaningful way.

Mayo Clinic provides an excellent learning environment for healthcare management graduate students interested in health care leadership. Administrative interns join a specific division or department for the summer and are precepted by an Operations Administrator or Vice Chair of Administration. Each intern will fill this position for ten to twelve weeks, dependent on availability and work unit needs. Preceptors provide graduate students with a broad range of learning opportunities depending on the priorities of the department, as well as the graduate student’s professional interests. Every intern will learn about Mayo Clinic’s integrated system and receive mentorship from senior administrative leaders, as well as current and former Administrative Fellows.

Sample activities include:

  • Leading or supporting process improvement initiatives
  • Developing process flow maps of current processes and making recommendations around improving processes
  • Managing and analyzing data to inform department strategy
  • Supporting the capital budget process and/or evaluating prospective products or vendors
  • Attending and participating in high-level management meetings
  • Observing clinical care and speaking with caregivers or patients
  • Attending grand rounds, leadership lecture series or other educational lectures
  • Reviewing and completing financial analyses and statements
  • Assessing and summarizing new business opportunities
  • Participating in clinical simulations and facility tours

Our internship program also provides time for professional development and learning through lunch and learns, site visits, and presentations that give you the opportunity to learn from our dedicated practitioners, as well as your fellow interns. This is a paid internship.

Please note that graduate students that apply for and/or complete an administrative internship at Mayo Clinic are at neither an advantage nor disadvantage if they later choose to apply to the post-graduate Administrative Fellowship Program.

Qualities we look for in our future Healthcare Leaders:

Ideal candidates are those that exude the Mayo Clinic values of respect, integrity, compassion, healing, teamwork, innovation, excellence, and stewardship through their academic pursuits, professional experience, and volunteerism.

Testimonials:

“As an Intern, I felt that administrative leaders were personally invested in my development throughout the summer and took an interest in the projects I was working on. You are granted incredible access to every level of the organization and encouraged to jump in and bring your perspective to complex problems from day one. The support you receive from not only your preceptor, mentor, and program director, but all Mayo Clinic staff is amazing, and one of the main reasons why I decided to return for an Administrative Fellowship.” - Alec Bloom

By the end of my summer internship, I not only left with a series of projects I could speak to, but I had also built an incredible professional network. Throughout my entire experience, my summer preceptor helped me cultivate leadership skills in project management, teamwork, and operational excellence. She also helped me grow a lot of my soft leadership skills, which included assertiveness, empathy, and confidence. I look forward to continuing my journey with the Mayo Clinic and working alongside some of the best and brightest people who are dedicated to putting the needs of the patient first in research, education, and practice.”- Alyssa Na Teck
