Responsibilities
The Department of Surgery has three internships available. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree related to Surgery. The primary purpose of the Undergraduate Internship is to provide an intern with field experiences relevant to surgery and surgical education. The intern is responsible for observing the functions and processes of General Surgery Residency Simulation group. In addition, they may be given selected work assignments to integrate medical knowledge and surgical skills into facilitating General Surgery Residency Simulation activities for the benefit of medical students and general surgery residents. In doing so, the intern will receive opportunities to join in general surgery residency education research projects that may continue into research achievements and mentorship relationships even after completion of the internship. There will be ample opportunity to observe/shadow surgeons in various surgical specialties in the clinic, hospital, emergency department and operating rooms.
The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility. The duration and timing of the internship will be arranged with the intern and the sponsoring educational facility. Will need to be available 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Fridays for General Surgery Residency Simulation sessions. Applications will be accepted until February 20, 2026. Qualifications:
The incumbent must be enrolled in a degree program from a college or university. Typically, this internship would occur after the student has taken most of the courses required by the degree program.
The degree program must require an internship as a graduation requirement (or offer as a credit option).
