ResponsibilitiesResearch Platforms Unit – Aging and Dementia Imaging Research (ADIR) Lab
The Aging and Dementia Imaging Research (ADIR) Lab is an internationally recognized leader in imaging research focused on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The Research Platforms Unit provides the software engineering, data management, and computational infrastructure that enables these research efforts. We are seeking a Limited Tenure (LT) Software Engineer to develop, maintain, and support software systems that facilitate large-scale imaging research and data management.
The successful candidate will work in a collaborative Linux-based development environment alongside physicians, PhD scientists, biostatisticians, medical physicists, imaging scientists, and software engineers. This position offers the opportunity to design and implement software solutions that support imaging research involving large, multi-institutional datasets while contributing to the development of robust, scalable, and maintainable research infrastructure.
Unlike many software engineering positions, this role provides significant ownership of projects throughout the software development lifecycle. The successful candidate will work directly with research staff to understand requirements, design technical solutions, implement and validate software, deploy production applications, and provide long-term support and enhancements. Engineers are encouraged to identify opportunities for innovation and process improvement while helping shape the future direction of the laboratory's research software ecosystem.
Primary Responsibilities
· Design, develop, maintain, and support software applications, scripts, and automated workflows for research data management, data extraction, quality control, and data analysis.
· Lead software projects through the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, architecture and design, implementation, testing, deployment, documentation, and long-term maintenance.
· Develop and maintain repository systems and internal databases using PostgreSQL and related technologies to support imaging and research data management.
· Design, develop, and maintain RESTful APIs and software services for interacting with databases, imaging repositories, file systems, and external research platforms.
· Develop software to support the acquisition, validation, organization, and processing of research imaging data, including troubleshooting data transfer issues involving DICOM and other medical imaging standards.
· Create and maintain automated data processing, quality assurance, and deployment workflows to improve the efficiency, reproducibility, and reliability of research software.
· Collaborate closely with investigators and research staff to translate scientific and operational requirements into practical software solutions.
· Maintain, enhance, and test existing Python, Bash, and MATLAB code while developing new software components using established software engineering practices.
· Participate in software testing, debugging, validation, documentation, and peer code reviews to ensure software quality, reliability, security, and maintainability.
· Assist with the administration and support of research databases, imaging repositories, computational environments, and associated software infrastructure.
· Troubleshoot application, database, data integration, and workflow issues, identify root causes, and implement sustainable solutions.
· Prepare and maintain technical documentation, software specifications, and user documentation.
· Evaluate, recommend, and adopt emerging software engineering tools and technologies—including automation, containerization, CI/CD, and AI-assisted development tools—when appropriate to improve software quality, developer productivity, and research workflows.
QualificationsBachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field; Or an Associates’ degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field with an additional 2 years of experience as described below.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess experience in several of the following areas:
· Software development using Python, Bash, SQL, and related programming languages.
· Object-oriented software development and modern software engineering principles.
· Relational database design and development, preferably using PostgreSQL.
· Development and integration of RESTful APIs.
· Linux operating systems, shell scripting, and software deployment.
· Experience with version control systems, including Subversion (SVN), Git, and/or Mercurial.
· Experience with collaborative software development practices, including code reviews, issue tracking, and software documentation.
· Familiarity with continuous integration and automation tools such as GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD platforms.
· Experience with container technologies, including Apptainer (Singularity), Docker, or similar technologies for developing reproducible scientific computing environments.
· Familiarity with AI-assisted software development tools such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar technologies.
· Medical imaging formats and standards, particularly DICOM.
· Research imaging repositories and data management platforms (e.g., XNAT or similar systems).
· Automated testing, debugging, software validation, and software lifecycle management.
· Development of automated data processing, quality control, or workflow management systems.
· Scientific computing, data visualization, healthcare informatics, or research computing experience is desirable.
Desired Attributes
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities, and a commitment to developing reliable, maintainable software. The individual should be comfortable working independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams and managing multiple concurrent projects. Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn new technologies are essential, as is the ability to identify opportunities to improve research workflows through thoughtful software design and automation.
This Limited Tenure Software Engineer position provides an opportunity to make meaningful contributions to internationally recognized Alzheimer's disease and dementia research by developing software and computational infrastructure used by investigators across Mayo Clinic and collaborating institutions. The work performed in this role directly supports scientific discovery while providing opportunities to work with modern software engineering practices, imaging informatics, and emerging technologies in biomedical research.
