And with continuing education and advancement opportunities at every turn, you can build a long, successful career with Mayo Clinic.

Responsibilities

This graduate internship is a full-time position Summer-Fall 2026 (May or June through December) on site in Rochester, Minnesota.

The primary purpose of the Undergraduate Engineer Internship is to provide an engineering student with relevant engineering experience. One or more mentors will be assigned to the intern to provide instruction, guidance and to assess performance, as well as be a technical resource for questions. The intern is responsible for learning the procedures and processes of the Division of Engineering and the assigned work unit. In addition, the intern will be given selected engineering work assignments to reinforce the learning experience and to provide benefit to the work unit. The engineering assignments may include designing components, developing a project strategy, gathering user needs, requirements and specifications, evaluating commercial components, prototyping, performing design verification and design validation, troubleshooting, and participating in design reviews. All assignments are within the context of the Division of Engineering Quality Management System (including safety risk management) and are performed in a multi-disciplinary development environment. The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility (if applicable).

The Additive Manufacturing (AM) intern will be assigned to the Additive Manufacturing Facility (AMF) in the Mechanical Development Unit within the Division of Engineering (DOE). This unit is one of several specialized groups within DOE, similar to the Software and Electronics Development Units. The Mechanical Development Unit leverages mechanical engineering expertise as part of DOE’s multidisciplinary approach to developing unique devices and systems for Mayo Clinic providers and researchers.

The AMF, a dedicated Mayo Clinic 3D printing space, houses a titanium printer, a variety of polymer printers, and a suite of post-processing equipment. The parts fabricated here support the development of one-of-a-kind medical devices, laboratory instruments, and other products in service to Mayo Clinic patients. DOE designers and engineers iteratively print concept models, functional prototypes, and end-use parts for projects undertaken at the request of Mayo Clinic staff members. The application of AM accelerates the development cycle from initial request through final product by providing parts for faster form, fit, and function evaluation.

The candidate will collaborate with designers, technicians, and engineers, and project managers as a variety of project needs. Their project responsibilities will encompass computer-aided design (CAD) using SolidWorks, prototype development with AM, verification testing, and engineering documentation. They will receive guidance and work direction from one or more mentors assigned to them. The candidate will perform hands-on work with both metal and polymer additive manufacturing technologies and will take on tasks from their mentors, including the Additive Manufacturing Facility Coordinator, Metal Lead, and Polymer Lead.

The ideal candidate will have experience with 3D printing technologies using one or more feedstock types. Basic understanding of AM processes and material science is preferred.

Qualifications

The incumbent must be enrolled in an engineering, management information systems, or other technology-related degree program from an accredited college or university and have completed a minimum of four semesters – or the equivalent – of instruction toward their degree.

A GPA of 3.4 or greater on a 4.0 scale
