Responsibilities

The Division of Engineering is looking for an intern to assist our innovation project teams providing technical services to clinicians innovating to improve Mayo Clinic’s research and clinical practice.  The primary purpose of the Engineering Internship is to provide students with relevant engineering experiences.

This internship goes from approximately May through December, 2026.  It is on-site in Rochester, MN. Some interns have been able to maintain an on-line evening college course, but accepting this position requires the intern to not pursue any significant coursework for the summer or fall of 2026.

The position offers a wide range of job responsibilities, including: providing inputs and updates within the project portfolio management processes; assisting project managers in interviewing clinician innovators to determine the technical services they need, obtaining clinical and human factors needs to determine project requirements, observing surgery and clinical procedures, partnering with engineers and technical staff to translate requirements into design strategy and a development plan, participate in brainstorming, and drafting product documentation (technical writing).

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; have strong technical writing skills and be able to author technical documents; work independently; understand the project development process; have proficiency in Microsoft applications such as Office, SharePoint, Teams, and Excel to manage data and create reports; be working toward a technical engineering degree; and have a desire to learn about medical device development.

The candidate will be introduced to the processes and documentation requirements of medical device development; gain experience conducting clinician interviews to elicit needs and requirements, participate in engineering innovation sprint sessions, brainstorming, design consultation, and internal and externally outsourced proof of concept device fabrication projects.

Mentors will be assigned to provide instruction, guidance and to assess performance. The intern is responsible for learning the procedures and processes of the Engineering team.  The intern will be given work assignments to reinforce the learning experience and to provide benefit to the work unit. The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility (if applicable).
