Responsibilities

The Mayo Clinic Health System Department of Medical Oncology & Hematology in Eau Claire, WI invites you to join our growing team! The practice is seeking a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) who will operate with a high level of autonomy and have a focus on hospital inpatient work along with acute oncology patient care needs in the outpatient setting. Due to the complexity and breadth of the patient population, the ideal NP/PA candidate requires a commitment to challenging and complex patients, excellent communication and assessment skills, as well as the ability to balance treatment with symptom management and psychosocial support.  This role will provide comprehensive patient assessments, ordering and interpreting of appropriate laboratory tests and radiologic exams, diagnosis, treatment and management of chemotherapy side effects and medical co-morbidities.  It will be expected to manage side effects and complications from underlying co-morbidities, hematologic disease and oncologic diseases and therapy, while collaborating with consultant Oncologists, Ambulatory Pharmacists, and fellow Advanced Practice Practitioners in the clinic and hospital practices. Consults and referrals to physicians and other members of the health care team would be made as appropriate while Hospitalist team handles majority of admissions. Education and support to patients and their families would be expected as well. Lastly, this position could include performing minor procedures, such as bone marrow biopsies.

The practice currently has four full-time physicians, two part-time physicians, five full-time APPs, one full-time Ambulatory Pharmacist embedded in the practice, two Genetic Counselors, Clinic & Infusion RNs, Certified Medical Assistants, and additional support services such as Social Work (Cancer Guide), Dietician, Chaplain, Financial Counselors, and Research Coordinators. The practice supports a region with five hospitals and three cancer center locations (Eau Claire, Menomonie & Barron). Eau Claire is the primary location with a 180-bed inpatient hospital and 18 chair chemotherapy unit. The practice includes a mix of adult medical oncology along with malignant and benign hematology. Work is in concert with onsite Mayo radiation oncology, surgical, radiology and pathology colleagues via several interdisciplinary tumor boards held weekly and monthly journal clubs. Opportunity to also engage with Mayo Clinic tumor specific groups through the utilization of eConsults, presentation at enterprise tumor boards, and engagement with aligned research opportunities. Internal teaching opportunities exist for rotating NP/PA students, medical students, onsite Eau Claire Family Medicine residents, and Mayo Clinic Rochester Hematology or Medical Oncology Fellows. Once established clinically, the Department is very supportive of mentoring NP/PAs in other academic and research pursuits to support Mayo Clinic’s three shield mission.
