Responsibilities
The Respiratory Therapy Assistant (RTA) assists licensed registered respiratory therapists by providing the most basic respiratory therapy treatments and procedures. The RTA performs patient and family care and documentation at the most basic performance level under the direct, immediate, and on premise supervision of a licensed registered respiratory therapist. The RTA performs airway clearance, administers aerosolized medications, and assists with oxygen therapy administration/transport. The RTA reports to the Director of Respiratory Care through a Respiratory Care Supervisor. RTA’s must be actively enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with successful completion of their first year of coursework.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) Must be actively enrolled in an accredited Respiratory Therapy program and have completed at least one year of coursework.Expected to follow proper precautions to avoid potential exposure to infectious agents, hazardous substances, noise, and heat. Good manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination to work with equipment. Must be able to differentiate medical life support gases. Is able to identify the steps for proper equipment processing. Must have good verbal communication skills. Ability to read and communicate effectively in English. Ability to interact with a variety of individuals. Excellent written and communication skills are required to be used during contact with physicians, hospital staff, patients, and the public. Ability to work harmoniously in a team environment. Have strong independent problem solving skills to respond to unpredictable situations. Maturity, initiative, commitment to patient and customer service, and good judgment are required. Flexibility (Works flexible hours, which include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends). Basic computer skills. Previous knowledge of medical terminology/abbreviations helpful. Should be familiar with The Joint Commission standards and requirements.
Current Basic Life Support certification.
