Responsibilities
The Hematopathology Morphology Laboratory specializes in performing automated complete blood counts (CBCs), automated and manual cell counts, and crystal analysis on body fluids. In addition, the team analyzes cellular morphology in peripheral blood, body fluids, and bone marrow, assists with internal bone marrow collections, and supports hematopathologists with external bone marrow and lymph node consultations.
As an Education Specialist, you will participate in the identification and planning of work unit education. You will be integral to the development of educational programs for medical trainees (pathologists, residents, fellows, post docs, etc.) as directed by laboratory leadership, Residency and Fellowship Program Directors. Examples of the important work that you will do as an Education Specialist are:
- Developing, implementing and maintaining the clinical laboratory education program for students and interns rotating in the laboratory in compliance with affiliate program requirements and in collaboration with Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences (MCSHS) and Laboratory/Division/Department leadership.
- Developing, implementing, and maintaining new employee training and education programs in collaboration with laboratory and division leadership to ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Supporting the clinical education faculty with formal education programs within the MCSHS as assigned.
- Teaching, training, and mentoring student and employees.
- Developing, implementing, and maintaining competency programs.
- Actively partnering with team members by fostering an inclusive work environment and respecting others with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
*Individuals hired to this position are required to complete 2 years in this position before becoming eligible to apply to other positions within Mayo Clinic.
**This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship with the exception of the TN visa classification; Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.
Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must have:
- Bachelor's degree in clinical/medical laboratory science (CLS/MLS), medical technology (MT), chemistry, biological science, or
- Bachelor's degree in addition to a certificate in MLS,
- With two years of relevant laboratory experience
*A HEW certificate may be substituted for the specified degree.
Additional Qualifications
- Two years of experience with peripheral blood, body fluid and bone marrow morphology is preferred.
- Experience performing WBC differentials on blood, body fluid and bone marrows is preferred.
- Experience with red blood cell morphology and have the ability to identify various forms of red cell poikilocytosis is preferred.
- Prior experience in teaching, training and mentoring students and employees is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal).
- Strong organizational skills and self-initiative
- Patience and the ability to effectively coach and mentor others.
- Experience with data collection, organization, analysis, and delivery of information.
- Ability to work as a team member including taking direction from others.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to manage projects.
- ASCP or other certification pertinent to the laboratory field may be required depending on the laboratory specialty and prevailing regulatory requirements.
