Responsibilities

The Anatomic Pathology Frozen Section Laboratory is looking for Histology Technicians/Histotechnologists. The Frozen Section Laboratory is a fast-paced department responsible for retrieving specimens from the operating room (OR) and bringing them into the laboratory where they are entered into the laboratory information system and prepared for freezing. Once reviewed, the diagnosis is given to the surgeon in the OR via intercom.

Histology Technician:

Performs a variety of technical procedures that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations. These technical procedures may include accessioning specimens, specimen processing and microtomy techniques, paraffin, frozen, and plastic. Technical staining procedures include routine Hematoxylin and Eosin, special stains, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemical staining, and in situ hybridization. Participates in on-call rotations, including weekends as needed.

Histotechnologist:

Prepares specimens and performs testing procedures on pathology specimens that result in the creation of microscopic slide preparations for diagnostic and/or prognostic analysis by the pathologist. Applies technical theory to provide overall operational support necessary to maintain and optimize testing activities. 

*Individuals hired to this position are required to complete 2 years in this position before becoming eligible to apply to other positions within Mayo Clinic.

**These positions are ineligible for visa sponsorship. Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program**



Qualifications

Histology Technician (HT): 

  • Associate degree required.
  • Coursework including 24 semester hours of the following: 
  • at least 12 credit hours in chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology,
  • 6 credit hours in chemistry, 
  • 6 credit hours in biology
  • Histology Technician (HT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

Histotechnologist (HTL):

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Histotechnologist (HTL) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

Additional Qualifications

  • Graduate of a NAACLS accredited program preferred. 
  • Graduates of the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences Histology Technician Program will receive preference.
  • Ability to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off shifts, holidays, on-call, and weekend work assignments.
  • Histotechnologist (HTL or HTLi) certified through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) required at start date. Employees obtaining certification(s) after January 1, 2004, will be required to demonstrate evidence of ongoing maintenance of certification.

  • MUST have a DETAILED equivalency evaluation.
  • MUST show US equivalent degree.
  • Evaluation MUST be completed from an organization listed as a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) www.naces.org OR the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE) www.aice-eval.org

Compensation Detail

The minimum rate of pay for Histology Technician is $25.37 per hour. The minimum rate of pay for Histotechnologist is $31.01 per hour.
