ResponsibilitiesThe Plan, Design, and Architecture Unit within Enterprise Infrastructure Services - Service Management is seeking an IT Cloud Architect to lead the planning and design of data infrastructure solutions supporting Generative AI, Research, and clinical practice. This position will specialize in on-premise Linux solutions and cloud-based technologies, enabling cutting-edge Generative AI (GenAI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC) capabilities. The architect will define the architectural roadmap for our next-generation data infrastructure and cloud environments, aligning with Mayo Clinic's strategic goals and research initiatives, with a focus on supporting Gen AI/LLM and HPC workloads. This role involves strategic planning, system design, and technical leadership, ensuring the infrastructure is scalable, efficient, robust, and secure. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of Linux server administration, data storage technologies, cloud computing principles, and architectural frameworks, with a proven ability to translate complex requirements into innovative solutions. The architect will design scalable and resilient solutions for high-performance GPU clusters and HPC environments, optimizing for GenAI model training and execution. They will also develop architectural blueprints for data storage, processing, access, and cloud deployment, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, resource utilization, and security.
Responsibilities include designing best practices for cloud system design, collaborating on risk mitigation strategies, and coordinating with finance to determine financial models. Furthermore, the architect will contribute to cloud governance, manage change control processes, and drive cost optimization by monitoring utilization and capacity metrics. They will also ensure spend accountability towards cloud consumers, providing resources for forecasting, cost monitoring, and optimization opportunities. As a technical leader, the IT Cloud Architect will provide guidance to engineering teams, overseeing the implementation of architectural designs and ensuring adherence to best practices. They will maintain technical expertise, studying vendor products and services to identify those which best meet Mayo Clinic's needs. The IT Cloud Architect will mentor other staff, collaborating effectively with teams across the organization to investigate and resolve problems, recommend improvements, and provide consultative expertise.

QualificationsBachelor’s degree with 7+ years' demonstrated technical experience and 3 years of demonstrated leadership experience, or Associate’s degree with 9 years’ experience and 3 years of demonstrated leadership experience, or HS/GED with 11 years of experience and 3 years of demonstrated leadership experience in a large, complex organization like Mayo Clinic may be considered in lieu of the degree. Applies advanced knowledge of a particular field of specialization to the completion of highly complex assignments. Involves medium to high level of cross-product exposure and understanding. Involved in multiple medium to large sized projects. Serves as an individual contributor, consultant to peers and provides indirect leadership. Functions with a high degree of autonomy; generally, requires little or no guidance. Works as a team lead or internal consultant. Viewed as an expert and provides knowledge and counsel to others. Certification in cloud engineering is required within 12-24 months.
The idea candidate will have demonstrated experience with the following:
- Knowledge and experience of Linux server administration and architecture in a large organization (100+ systems) and storage expertise in a highly collaborative Linux environment.
- Understanding of architectural principles, design patterns, system integration methodologies, and cloud computing frameworks.
- Knowledge of deep learning frameworks, AI/ML software, and HPC environments.
- Engineering components such as networking, parallel multiprocessing such as MPI, MVAPICH2, OpenMP, HPC job schedulers SLURM, performance tuning NVIDIA GPU applications, Base Command, Storage Technologies (Isilon, DDN) and containerization technologies (Singularity, Docker, Kubernetes).
- Knowledge and experience with GCP and Azure cloud technologies and services.
- Hold a current/active GCP or Azure architect/engineer certification.
