Responsibilities
This position supports Engineering’s mission to drive innovation and new product development at Mayo Clinic, with a unique opportunity to help define the next generation of tools and technologies that enable us to deliver better care for our patients. The role contributes to Mayo Clinic’s commitment to transforming healthcare and improving patient outcomes through innovation and excellence by developing cutting-edge solutions and leveraging emerging technologies.
This position will lead technical product development projects for advancing biomedical engineering systems including clinical medical devices, products to enable unique medical research, proof-of-concept prototypes, and other products related to medical care.
Some projects will require oversight and coordination to be outsourced; some projects will be internal development leading project teams of 2 to 8 engineers and support staff. Development projects are led in partnership with an assigned project technical lead. Has primary responsibility for overall project activities throughout the project lifecycle. This position will collaborate with physicians and researchers; develop User Needs and project priorities; negotiate scope and manage change; communicate status and expectations to all project stakeholders: engineering managers, project team, collaborators and Mayo Clinic leadership; provide work direction to project team members.
Mentor and coach team members, fostering skill development in various engineering disciplines. Apply expertise in project and portfolio management and communications tools. Ensure compliance with the Quality Management System. Ensure projects align with safety risk management and regulatory requirements. Lead engineers and staff in a multi-disciplinary development environment, communicate effectively and provide concise project status and future plans. Develop technical documentation.
The PM will not formally manage staff, but does hold a leadership role in the work unit, working with management to move projects forward and oversee continuous improvement that aligns with the annual strategic plan. The PM will oversee a wide variety of assignments, and manage diverse, concurrent activities. Skills in communicating and planning are key to this position.
Qualifications
BS in Engineering or related field with 10 years of related experience; Or MS in Engineering or related field with 8 years of related experience; Or PhD in Engineering or related field with 6 years of related experience. Minimum of 4 years’ experience managing projects is required. PMP Certification by Project Management Institute is preferred. Masters or PhD is preferred.
The Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is not required but favorably viewed
Preferred Qualifications:
The most qualified candidate will be an experienced leader with:
- Demonstrated success in managing and leading technical projects, including outsourcing appropriate aspects of product development; and maintaining strong relationships with outsourcing partners
- Success leading development of rapidly created prototypes, agile practices, and iterative product development
- A strong technical background in engineering, with experience in electrical, mechanical, or software development
- Experience with quality management systems and safety risk management
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines
- Demonstrated success leading projects involving multi-disciplinary teams
- Expertise in project management methodologies.
Additional Helpful Experience:
- Hands-on experience with Artificial Intelligence tools in product development or project management.
- Background in wearable devices and automation technologies.
- A history of overseeing projects involving software as a medical device (SaMD).
