Responsibilities
To perform the necessary duties to provide quality care to all animals utilized in research including animal husbandry activities such as feeding, watering, sanitation, observation, breeding, weaning, Id animals (ear tag, tail marking and tattooing) general cage housekeeping, supplement enhancements if needed.
Performs animal husbandry in accordance with the research plans of the principal investigators research program. Will read and understand the IACUC protocols of the principal investigator program. Will understand the IACUC system in MIRIS. Will learn and use the data software for animal husbandry.
Provides assistance to the veterinary technologist in the care and treatment of laboratory animals. Communicates and learns for Veterinary staff.
Treats routine small animal health issues such as application of topical medication for skin issues, trims nails, treats malocclusion, provides nutritional and environmental support.
Receives, identifies, places incoming rodents (including quarantine), and ships/exports rodents.
Monitors rodents with non-life-threatening conditions such as prolapsed rectums, neurological deficiencies, malocclusion, etc.
May irradiate rodent and cells, conduct parasite testing, provide anesthetic monitoring, operate laboratory equipment, assist in preparing large animals for surgery, and preparing surgical packs.
Records entries on animal records as indicated by the research program, maintenance of rodent health care database and corresponding with principal investigators and research technicians via telephone or e-mail. Processes animal census data and enters into systems for record keeping and revenue billing.
Request orders and inventories supplies by communicating to laboratory supervisor.
Recommends ways to improve current procedures or processes to simplify or make them more efficient or more effective. Additional duties may be assigned as the required to fulfill departmental responsibilities.
Qualifications
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position including F1 OPT STEM. Must be a U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, refugee or asylee.
The position requires a minimum of a high school diploma and three years of animal handling experience or associate’s degree and 2 years of animal handling experience or bachelor’s degree and 1 year of animal handling experience.
Must be able to assume responsibility, work independently, without close supervision, and cooperatively with other animal care technicians.
Must be able to carefully follow set procedures as dictated by the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Animals, the Animal Welfare Act and guidelines established by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.
Must have above average manual dexterity, stand on feet more than 50% of the time, be able to lift 50 pounds, bend, or squat routinely, and work with arms above shoulder level. It is preferred to be certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or higher or have graduated Veterinary Technician/Technologist.
Incumbent is required to obtain Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within one year or as soon as eligible if greater than one year of experience is required to meet LAT eligibility criteria.
