Now, we are building a new Center for Digital Health (CDH) that aims to produce a state-of-the-art integrated digital system. We want digital healthcare that's more accessible, scalable, and sustainable, and the unparalleled digital experience that we know is possible.
As a Principal Product Designer on the Design Systems team, you will help lead the strategic evolution of Mayo Clinic's digital design systems, ensuring they are accessible, scalable, and aligned with the organization's mission to provide unparalleled digital healthcare experiences.
You will partner with cross-functional teams to advocate for patient and provider needs while implementing cutting-edge design solutions that meet regulatory and accessibility standards.
This role joins a dedicated team of multi-disciplinary practitioners on the Skyway Design System team.
Key responsibilities for the Principal Digital Product Designer, Design Systems include:
- Contribute the design, implementation, and scaling of Mayo Clinic's Design System, Skyway, ensuring consistency and accessibility across all digital properties
- Create, maintain, and contribute to libraries in design tools (such as Figma) as well as documentation tools (such as Supernova and Storybook) to deliver components, patterns, and interaction models that support seamless user experiences.
- Align design systems with organizational goals and user needs acting as a key stakeholder in cross-disciplinary discussions, influencing decision-making at all levels.
- Collaborate with developers to bridge design and code, ensuring technical and functional alignment prior to implementation.
- Mentor and guide teams in design systems best practices, fostering a culture of design excellence and systems-thinking with technical and non-technical partners.
- Understands and designs to meet WCAG 2.2 AA Accessibility Standard
- This role is the senior-most individual contributor level in Mayo Clinic’s job construct and will be expected to have substantial strategic influence, focusing on cross-functional and enterprise-level impact, as well as a large emphasis on mentoring and guiding team members. This role will not have any direct reports.
QualificationsBachelors Degree and 6 years of experience, or HS Diploma/GED and 10 years of experience. Understanding of the Human Centered Design (HCD) process. Working knowledge of current User Experience methods.
Excellent visual communication skills, and refined ability to clarify complex problems. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including confident presentation skills. Excellent ability to design on behalf of people with serious and complex medical conditions. Self-motivated and excellent organizational skills to lead critical projects. Keeps up with Design industry knowledge and brings to bear on operations. Brings innovation in process or methods to the Experience Design section. Mentors Experience Designers in their work. Demonstrates knowledge of the ethics and professionalism in Design. Good understanding of the security / sensitivity around patient medical data. Experience working with Accessibility concerns for Digital products. End-to-end knowledge of all stages of User Experience Design (Sketching, Prototyping, Iteration, Refinement and Evaluation). Understands, organizes and directs the work of the Experience Designers. Is active in the Experience Design industry at large, and brings new knowledge to Mayo Clinic. Teaches and advocate for the HCD Process at Product leadership levels. Communicates persuasively about the value of the discipline. Models exemplary work and professionalism as a non-managing leader in the XD unit. Strong perspective on accessibility and how to infuse accessibility in all facets of the product development process.
The preferred candidate will have the following experience:
- Experience developing, documenting, scaling and maintaining design systems across multiple products and platforms
- Experience delivering design system components for native iOS and Android environments
- Experience developing educational initiatives to foster understanding and adoption of the design system across the organization
