Responsibilities

The Senior Director of Health Policy is a strategic leader responsible for shaping and advancing the organization’s health policy agenda at the national, state, and system levels. Reporting to the Vice Chair of Strategy, the Senior Director provides strategic direction for the health policy function, leads a team of policy professionals, and collaborates closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of healthcare transformation. This role combines high-level policy analysis, strategic planning, advocacy coordination, and thought leadership to support the organization's mission and long-term strategic goals. The individual in this role exemplifies behaviors associated with high-performing teams, including positive teamwork, transparency, communication, engagement, diversity of thought, and a continuous improvement mindset.

The Senior Director of Health Policy oversees the development and execution of complex health policy initiatives, providing senior-level guidance on legislative and regulatory developments and translating them into strategic opportunities and risks for the organization. This individual is accountable for producing high-quality policy analysis, briefings, and advocacy materials that align with enterprise priorities in clinical practice, research, and education. The Senior Director partners with executive leaders, government relations, legal, public affairs, and strategy teams to inform and unify policy positions, while ensuring deliverables are met and outcomes achieved.

The Senior Director of Health Policy represents the organization in external coalitions, forums, and with policymakers, helping to elevate the institution's voice and influence in healthcare policy. This role also serves as a people leader and change agent, mentoring staff, managing performance, and fostering a collaborative, impact-driven team culture. The Senior Director demonstrates executive presence and servant leadership, working across teams and functions to advance Mayo Clinic’s strategic objectives and enterprise reputation in the policy landscape.

Qualifications

•    Master’s degree and 10 years of experience in public policy, health administration, public health, Law or other relevant advanced degree (e.g., PhD, JD, MBA) and at least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in health policy, consulting, government affairs, strategy, or a related field within a complex healthcare, academic, professional advisory or governmental. environment.

Additional Experience and/or Qualifications:
•    Seven years of people leadership experience preferred.
•    Well-established network of policy and industry contacts.
•    Resilient change agent comfortable thriving in ambiguity. Capable of working autonomously with minimal direction and under pressure.
•    Proven ability to successfully undertake and execute multiple large and complex initiatives simultaneously.
•    Proven success in leading policy strategy, managing cross-functional teams, and influencing legislative or regulatory outcomes.
•    Experience in driving change by influencing senior executives, making recommendations to drive key organizational initiatives.
•    Deep knowledge of healthcare systems, policy development, reimbursement models, and regulatory processes.
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to distill complex policy issues for diverse audiences.
•    Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and work collaboratively across disciplines.
•    Strong analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
•    Experience working within or with academic medical centers, integrated health systems, or public policy think tanks.
•    Experience representing an organization in external policy discussions, advocacy initiatives, or coalition-building efforts.
•    Established relationships with policymakers, agencies, and industry leaders.
•    Demonstrates competencies in problem-solving and systems thinking, risk taking and innovation, collaborative leadership, executive communication, navigating ambiguity and driving results.
•    Resilient change agent that thrives in ambiguity. Comfort working in an empowered fashion with minimal direction and under pressure.
•    Relationship-oriented, high-performing individual with a strong balance of EQ and IQ.
•    Systems thinker with long-term desire to serve in executive leadership capacity.
•    Demonstrates strong executive presence and servant leadership.

$190,694.40 - $286,020.80 / year. Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
