Because of its relatively high sensitivity and rapid turnaround time, FISH is a powerful method used to identify numeric and structural abnormalities associated with both acquired and hereditary disorders. In the clinical laboratory setting, FISH is routinely used to diagnose and classify hematologic disorders such as acute leukemias, to detect recurrent abnormalities in solid tumors such as HER2 gene amplification in breast cancer, and to rapidly diagnose constitutional genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. Additionally, FISH is an important companion diagnostic test method in personalized medicine, including breast and lung cancer.
