Responsibilities

The CNP Technologist 1 works in the neurodiagnostic laboratory performing any one or more of the following procedures: Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS), Evoked Potentials (EP), Autonomic Reflex Screen (ARS), and Movement Neurophysiology Studies (MNS).  This position will focus primarily on NCS with opportunities for learning and performing EP, ARS, and MNS.  NCS testing is performed on patients with common and uncommon nerve and muscle conditions and includes commonly performed nerve conduction studies and advance techniques.  The technologist is responsible for complete and accurate patient preparation, data acquisition, providing a safe testing environment and must demonstrate competent skills and knowledge in one or more of these areas.

Examples of duties:

  • Review patient’s electronic medical record for orders and special needs.
  • Educate and prepare patient for testing. 
  • Take an appropriate patient history geared towards patient’s symptoms to identify nerves for testing.
  • Perform common and uncommon NCS with high technical acuity adhering to Mayo’s protocols, efficiently and compassionately.
  • Perform critical thinking during NCS to ensure each patient receives a thorough and customized test for their specific symptoms and physiology.
  • Recognizes and troubleshoots physiologic and non-physiological artifact and technical issues.
  • Attend and participate in lab meetings for team sharing and discussion regarding interesting case studies, educational topics, and lab updates.

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS: Must achieve a National Registry certification in at least one of the neurodiagnostic procedures relative to the needs of the department within 2 years of hire.

This opening can be filled by a Tech I, II, III 



Qualifications

EDUCATION: High School diploma or equivalent, or Associates degree or higher, or an accredited school of END Technology. Must have working knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
EXPERIENCE: One or more years in Electro Neuro Diagnostic procedure testing (this includes clinical experience while attending formal END education).
*May enter department as a trainee, with goals to be set up by the supervisor and achieved within a set time frame.
Good human relation and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients of all ages and explain tests and provide a relaxing environment. Must be able to stand over 50% of the time, bending and kneeling routinely. Must be able to work with the arms above shoulder level. Must be able to lift more than 25 pounds. Must exercise proper caution to avoid potential exposure to: Chemical vapors – Heavy Metals – Ionizing Radiation – Laser – Microwaves – Infection Hazard – Skin contact with Chemicals, etc. Must work with Immunosuppressed patients.
