Responsibilities

Accurately transmits messages between Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients, healthcare providers and clinical support staff at MCHS. The Interpreter is responsible for sight translation of written materials during the course of an interpreting session only. Focuses on the patient/client as top priority. Carry out the operational/department duties and any duties essential to the operations of the department and deemed appropriate by the Language Services supervisor. Supports and helps clinical teams in their duties, within the interpreter role



Qualifications

Fluency in English and target language(s) at a passing rate of Competent or Outstanding with a minimum of 3 significant errors based on the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) rating scale through LanguageLine Solutions. High School degree required (Associate degree and/or Interpreter Training Certificate preferred Familiar with cultural diversities and socio-economic backgrounds. Good interpersonal, organizational and time-management skills

A basic understanding of medical protocol and terminology required. Comfortable discussing sensitive or personal issues, and understanding and presenting information of a scientific or technical nature. Ability to interact well with people and work as part of a team. Basic computer skills. Certification through the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) or The National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) is preferred. The CCHI exam includes an Associate Healthcare Interpreter (AHI) status or the Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) status. Certification through the NBCMI includes the Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) status, Qualified Medical Interpreter (QMI) status, or Screened Medical Interpreter (SMI) status must be obtained within 2 years from the date of hire. Associates or Bachelor degree preferred

Schedule Details

1 Weekday evening on-call (6pm to 6am) Minimum of 1 Weekend a month on-call (90 hours) Friday 6pm to Monday 6am Occasional weekday clinical hours based on coverage needs. This is a supplemental position, all shifts will be as needed and you will be required to be on campus when interpreting.

Weekend Schedule

Friday 6pm to Monday 6am - On-call. Volunteer basis with a minimum of 1 weekend a month. Holiday on-call based on a volunteer rotation.
