Responsibilities

The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Mayo Clinic Arizona is searching for an innovative leader to join a world class Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at its Destination Medical Center (DMC) in Phoenix, Arizona.   We are in search of a Cardiac Surgeon who will serve as the Surgical Director for the Heart Transplant program at Mayo Clinic Arizona.  The candidate may also have an opportunity to be a candidate for Division Chair depending on interest and experience.  Surgical Director of ECMO may also be considered as an additional opportunity.  

The Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation (and potentially the Division Chair of Cardiovascular Surgery), aligned with CT Surgery Department vision of Bold. Forward. Preeminent., will be expected to advance patient care, support the Division’s research efforts and to help guide in educating and developing the future generation of cardiovascular surgeons.  She/he will be responsible for achieving exceptional patient outcomes, as well as actively recruiting and retaining top talent to advance Mayo’s mission.  As Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation, she/he will be responsible for partnering with the medical director for heart transplantation to plan, organize, conduct and direct the activities of the heart transplant program.

  • Drive innovation across Practice, Education, and Research
  • Build and sustain a robust and diverse cardiovascular surgery practice
  • Foster collaboration across the organization to provide the best patient outcomes
  • Effective management that will align to Mayo Clinic’s 2030 strategy of identifying new cures for patients, connections through a digital strategy and transformational business models  
  • Partner with the Transplant Center to support our high-quality heart transplant program.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Board certified in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
  • Meets eligibility requirements of Primary Heart Transplant Surgeon delineated in UNOS bylaws
  • Successful completion of a 2-3 year accredited cardiothoracic surgery fellowship
  • M.D., D.O. or equivalent degree who is eligible to be licensed to practice in Arizona
  • Evidence of continued academic and scholarly activity in laboratory or clinical research; including those with interest in translational research
  • Strong leadership qualities
  • Superb clinician with understanding of cardiovascular surgery, ECMO, and heart transplant practices
  • Drive on-going practice innovation
  • Adept at mentoring junior staff
  • Ability to seamlessly work in a cardiovascular team concept and to build relationships and networks globally
  • Recognized as an expert in their field
  • This is a leadership position which requires the ability to effectively develop others, recruit and retain talent and have an understanding/appreciation for creating and supporting diverse teams.
