Responsibilities
The Summer Employment Opportunity Program (SEOP) provides temporary summer employment opportunities to children, stepchildren and spouses of Mayo Clinic employees enrolled in a college degree granting program of study and is intended to help supervisors accommodate employee vacation requests when seasonal work volumes are high.
As a Medicolegal Death Investigator, you will be conducting death investigations on an on-call basis for the Winona area under the jurisdiction of the county Medical Examiner (ME). You will respond quickly to potentially traumatic and/or disturbing death scenes and conduct examinations of decedent, confirming death, and securing decedent and property on their person. You will actively partner with team members by fostering an inclusive work environment and respecting others with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.
- Coordinates field data collection, preserves evidence at scene, photographs scene, acquires and compiles pertinent medical history, performs data entry, and generates reports.
- Writes complete, accurate and comprehensive statement of investigations.
- Provides timely communication of pertinent case information to Olmsted County Medical Examiner (OCME) staff, Office of Decedent Affairs, law enforcement and decedent next of kin, as appropriate.
- Facilitates transportation of remains to designated ME facility. Performs additional tasks as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications
To be considered for this SEOP opportunity you must meet the below qualifications.
- Requires an associate degree or completion of the Mayo Clinic Medical Examiner's Office internship, or a high school diploma/GED and a minimum of 2 years of work experience applicable to the duties of this job (i.e., emergency response, law enforcement, or medical profession).
- Must be a child, stepchild, or spouse of a current Mayo Clinic employee.
- Must be currently enrolled in a degree granting program.
- Must be returning to college in the fall.
- Must be able to work a minimum of 10 weeks.
- Must be 18 years of age or older by the start of the program.
Additional Qualifications
- SEOP employees should not expect vacation/days-off to be approved during their commitment.
- Bachelor's degree in related field is preferred.
- Experience with computers (i.e. Microsoft Office, web-based systems) is necessary.
- Previous employment as investigator with Medical Examiner or Coroner office is preferred
- American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators certification with appropriate certification maintenance is preferred.
- Previous experience with transport of decedents is preferred.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy.
- Ability to adapt to high stress and traumatic situations.
- Ability to work independently with strong communication (oral and written), problem solving, and organizational abilities.
Licenses/Certifications
- Must have a valid driver's license, with acceptable driving record, and current vehicle insurance.
