Responsibilities
Independently sets up and performs experiments and procedures in support of lab goals and grant commitments (e.g. assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc.). Contributes to the planning, design and modification of studies and experiments in the research lab setting. Monitors results, reports unusual outcomes and suggests modifications. Collects, enters, summarizes, and analyzes data. May oversee and assist with the training of residents, fellows and temporary lab personnel in lab techniques. Works with minimal supervision and performs assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator.

The Lab of Dr. Andrew Haak at Mayo Clinic is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Research Technologist to join our dynamic team. Our lab brings together diverse skill sets in medicinal chemistry, molecular pharmacology and cellular physiology and uses creative approaches to high-throughput screening, synthetic chemistry and drug repurposing to develop novel molecular tools and therapies for rare and ultra rare diseases.
Position Overview:
The Senior Research Technologist will play a key role in establishing, managing, and advancing the organic chemistry capabilities of our lab. The successful candidate will assist the PI in selecting appropriate equipment to support our expansion, designing and synthesizing novel compounds, performing rigorous analytical validation, and maintaining accurate cataloging systems for synthesized compounds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Program Development: Lead the establishment and growth of the organic chemistry program within the lab, working closely with the PI to define the scope, goals, and timelines of research projects.
- Equipment Selection: Assist the PI in selecting and procuring laboratory equipment for organic synthesis and related processes. Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and optimized for the lab’s needs.
- Compound Design & Synthesis: Design, synthesize, and purify novel organic compounds for research purposes, using a variety of synthetic organic chemistry techniques. Troubleshoot synthesis challenges and optimize reaction conditions.
- Analytical Validation: Perform analytical validation of synthesized compounds using techniques such as NMR, HPLC, LC-MS, and other relevant methods. Interpret data and ensure the quality and purity of compounds.
- Cataloging & Documentation: Maintain detailed records of synthesis protocols, analytical data, and compound inventories. Implement an efficient system for cataloging compounds and ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
- Project Management: Manage organic synthesis projects from inception to completion, including coordinating resources, ensuring project timelines are met, and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Collaboration & Mentoring: Work closely with other members of our diverse research team, including chemists, biologists, and physicians to integrate organic chemistry into broader research objectives. Mentor junior lab staff and provide training in synthetic techniques and analytical methods.
Qualifications
Requires bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science with 4 years of research laboratory experience. Master's degree in biology, chemistry, or other relevant science preferred.

Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or M.S. in Organic Chemistry/Medicinal Chemistry or a related field with significant experience in synthetic chemistry and laboratory management is preferred.
- Extensive experience with a variety of organic synthesis techniques (e.g., cross-coupling reactions, functional group interconversions, protecting group chemistry) and purification methods (e.g., column chromatography, recrystallization).
- Proficiency with analytical techniques, including NMR, MS, HPLC, and other relevant instruments.
- Experience with lab equipment selection, installation, and troubleshooting.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with experience in managing lab resources and inventory.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Additional Preferred Skills:
- Experience in designing compounds for specific biological or chemical targets.
- Familiarity with software for chemical structure drawing and data analysis (e.g., ChemDraw, Marvin Sketch).
- Experience with compound screening or high-throughput methods is a plus.

$64,500.80 - $96,824.00 / year Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
