Mayo Clinic is launching a new Department of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics Research, a timely response to the tremendous challenges and opportunities that technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence bring to the digital health arena. The new department will serve as the academic home for highly collaborative, multidisciplinary faculty and staff who leverage data science, informatics, and digital technologies to enable scientific discovery, translation, and application of data, information, and knowledge to promote the wellbeing of patients. Position description

Appointed, charged and authorized by the Executive Dean of Research, the Chair is responsible for leading the strategic vision, tactical implementation, and operational conduct for the Research Department of AI and Informatics to advance discovery to delivery, and transform health by leveraging data and technology through a cross shield collaboration in alignment with the guidelines and priorities established by the Executive Dean of Research and Mayo Clinic Board of Governors.


The Chair leads the Department with their administrative partner and is responsible for oversight of its activities across all Mayo Clinic campuses. The Chair will be expected to engage and integrate existing experts in artificial intelligence, informatics, imaging informatics, data science and bioinformatics across numerous disciplines, and to lead the development of novel programs in these and other areas in order to transform research, education and patient care. In order to meet the Department’s broad responsibilities to ensure sustained scientific excellence and to fulfill general institutional and site-specific goals, the Chair partners with the Center for Digital Health and AI (CDH) and collaborates with the leadership of all Departments, Divisions, Centers and Programs to effectively leverage Mayo Clinic’s capabilities across research, clinical, and educational portfolios. Promoting teamwork, optimizing integration opportunities, developing trust, and fostering collaborations within the Research Department of AI and Informatics and across Mayo Clinic are essential components of this position.

Specifically the Chair will:

  • Lead the design and development of business plans for the Department.

  • Plan and manage leadership development within the Department;

  • Administer the Department, including the design, implementation, and coordination of operational and administrative structures, and mechanisms for the Department activities; assume responsibilities, therefore, for all Department operations;

  • Facilitates appropriate allocation of resources based on priorities established by the Mayo Clinic Research Committee commensurate with the funding sources;

  • Facilitate the recruitment, onboarding, ongoing performance expectations, and retention of research faculty in AI;

  • Manage the Department budget;

  • Design, develop and facilitate collaborations and alliances with academia, industry and governmental agencies to advance communities of practice internationally;

  • Facilitate the adoption of AI technologies, and develop the best-in-class AI education, training, research and translational programs that will deliver real return on investment;

  • Make access to cutting-edge informatics and AI technology a standard practice;

  • Increase visibility to expertise in the area of AI and informatics;

  • Strengthen AI capabilities to provide new and impactful insights into health and disease and applied informatics capabilities to translate discoveries into the practice;

  • Provide a primary/secondary academic home supporting shared infrastructure, knowledge diffusion, and professional development;

  • Provide graduate education;

  • Increase academic and industry partnerships in AI.

The Chair of AI and Informatics for Research will report to the Executive Dean of Research.

Education and Requirements:

Ph.D, M.D., M.D. / Ph.D

Physician/Scientist with extensive expertise in research is required. Previous or current grant(s) through the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is preferred. A track record of research excellence and previous leadership experience in academic medicine is required. Academic rank of Professor is required. Leadership experience and expertise to establish a vision for the Department, advance the scientific goals and manage a complex organization is required. Demonstrated excellence in planning, interpersonal, leadership, and written and oral communication skills are required. Ability to develop, implement and promote innovation with the use of Artificial Intelligence is required.

  • Broad knowledge of current scientific, medical and technological fields;

  • Demonstrated administrative and management skills;

  • Track-record in developing competitive basic, clinical and/or translational research and educational programs;

  • Experience with the development, implementation and/or execution of strategic and business plans;

  • Effective oral and written communication, and excellent interpersonal skills;

  • Ability to articulate a vision and empower colleagues;

  • Evidence of effective professional relationship building, both internal and external, and demonstrated skills in creating and sustaining matrix organizations;

  • Commitment to diversity;

  • Evidence of senior leadership roles intra and extramurally, such as board memberships, senior advisory committees, professional organizations and editorial boards.


The Research Chair of AI and Informatics is a senior appointment within Mayo Clinic with the level of institutional recognition and administrative resources commensurate with the broad range and magnitude of assigned responsibilities.

The Chair is appointed upon the recommendation of the Executive Dean of Research to the Mayo Clinic Board of Governors and President and CEO.
