Position description
The Hospital Medicine Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant works collaboratively with the Hospitalist physician to deliver medical care to hospitalized patients. The focus of the job includes providing acute hospital care to complex medical patients.
This position is a SEMN regional position with primary work site in Austin. SEMN Sites include I-90 Corridor (Austin-Albert Lea), River Corridor (Red Wing, Cannon Falls, Lake City) and I-35 Corridor (Owatonna). Currently NPPA’s practice in our Red Wing site and Austin NPPA implementation is on-going.

Additional responsibilities include consulting on orthopedic, general surgery, and occasionally OB/GYN patients requiring pre-operative evaluation and/or management of medical comorbidities. A high level of autonomy is expected. The NP or PA provides comprehensive bedside assessment, ordering, conducting and interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosis, prescription of pharmacologic agents and treatments and non-pharmacologic therapies as well as documentation of patient care. The NP or PA will work with the interdisciplinary care team in coordinating discharge planning and facilitate the patient's transfer of care back to the primary provider. The NP or PA will consult and make referrals to physicians and other members of the health care team as appropriate.

The Austin hospital will have 40 med-surgical beds and 12 ICU beds. The NPPA would team with 2 physician Hospitalists working 7a-7p and provide in-patient care in collaboration with MD’s.including care for ICU patients. The ICU is remotely monitored 24/7 by Enhanced Critical Care in Rochester. Additionally there will be a 2 to 3 month training period including rotation at some of the larger Mayo Clinic sites.
  • Masters prepared graduate of an accredited school of nursing and Nurse Practitioner program. Current Minnesota RN license (or eligible) and certification (or eligible to be certified) as a FNP, ANP, or ACNP
  • Or graduate of accredited Physician Assistant program with current PA certification by NCCPA and registration as a PA by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (or eligible)
  • Must be eligible for DEA registration and billing privileges
  • One to two years experience in the care of medical/ surgical inpatients or emergency medicine is preferred, but will consider new graduates
  • ACLS & BLS
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required and must have demonstrated skill in working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.
