What we do: The Microbiome Systems Medicine Group at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN, USA), led by Dr. Jaeyun Sung, invites applications for postdoctoral research fellow positions in translational bioinformatics, systems biology, and computational medicine. This position has been created, in part, to increase our capacity to systematically analyze, integrate, and quantitatively model the tremendous amount of multi-omics data currently being generated at Mayo Clinic. These data sources include microbiomes, metabolomes, immune profiles, transcriptomes, and clinical and physiological surveys. By applying integrative, systems analysis approaches onto these data, our overall aim is to further understand the complex relationship between gut microbial organisms and human health, and to translate all new insights into the design of computational methods that aid clinical decision-making. Current research directions in the group include: 1) translational bioinformatics and tool development; 2) multi-omic disease network modeling & analysis; 3) in silico chemical ecology of the gut microbiome; and 4) gut microbiome in autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. What we’re looking for: This is a computational position. Prior bioinformatic experience working with omics data analysis (WGS metagenomics, RNA-seq and scRNA-seq, MS metabolomics, immune CyTOF), microbiology, immunology, or systems biology, as demonstrated through past research accomplishments, would be ideal. Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills, high enthusiasm and curiosity about science, as well as a strong ability to independently and creatively solve research problems, while working effectively with the principal investigator and lab colleagues, are required. The applicant must be strongly proficient with programming languages commonly used in data science (R, Python), and have reasonable familiarity with standard bioinformatics packages for processing and analyzing ’omics datasets. The applicant should have a Ph.D. in one of the following fields: computational biology, computer science, biostatistics, bioinformatics, biophysics, applied math, or any other relevant discipline. Ph.D. candidates with soon anticipated graduation are also encouraged to apply.

What to expect: The candidate will be mentored by Dr. Jaeyun Sung and other faculty investigators at Mayo Clinic with whom the group collaborates. The candidate can expect to receive solid training in a range of fields pertaining to biomedical data science, e.g., developing an intuition on how to approach large-scale datasets; learning statistical methods, bioinformatics pipelines, and mathematical modeling techniques; and understanding biological complexity and systems biology. Moreover, the candidate will get first-hand experience in clinical research, as well as the process behind filing intellectual property. Furthermore, he/she will have access to a wealth of resources including high-quality clinical data, a state-of-the-art high-performance computing facility, and the latest sequencing platforms. Lastly, the candidate can expect to receive timely input and guidance regarding manuscripts, fellowship proposals, and faculty applications.

Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program.
